Henry County Indiana Atlas page 19. (Indianapolis State Library)
During this year New castle, which the year following was selected as the county seat, had its beginning. In 1822 Benoni Finch, Philander M. Weaver, Nathan Lewis, Robert Pearson, Andrew Lewis, John Brumfield, Absalom Harvey,
Aaron Hobson, Joseph Conner, Micajah Chamnes, Absalom Hiatt, Sr. Absalom Hiatt Jr., Miles Murphy, Levi Hoover and Meshit Luellen, purchased lands at the Brookville land office. Within the next year Elias Welborn, THomas Ginn,
Conrad Slagall, John Swope, Richard Hiatt, David Hiatt, Absalom Hiatt, William Cosans and Jonathan Bond were the only persons who entered lands in the township.
Sent by Clifford Hardin. Absalom and Ann Rees Hiatt became Hicksites in 1828 along with the rest of their family and were dismissed by Duck Creek Friends Meeting. The Hicksites Friends built a new meeting house on a hill overlooking Duck Creek south of Greensboro. The old cemetery there where Absalom and Ann were probably buried was visited in 1984. A few old headstones and a very old pine tree are all that remain in the old section. Very likely headstones were never erected by Absalom and Ann since their beliefs would have rejected such a show of materialsim.

Harlan HIATT had 4 wives, I think all 4 wives, his daughter (Jane) and he too are burined in different cemeteries around Clarinda or Shanbough, Iowa. The first wife (Martha) and Jane died long before I was born and after he married the second time, his son Lewis stayed at our home a lot of the time. Then they moved to Nebraska and Lewis married there and had a family of daughters and later died. Then Uncle Harl returned and married a widow in Iowa. They lived there serveral years until she died. He married again there and lived several years. Grandfather (George W.), Irene Cox Hoffman and my parents (John adn Mary Jane (Cox) Tabler are all buried here at Hiawatha. Grandmother Cox (Celinda Jane) Jesse, Cynthia Cox, the Harlan HIATTS, my brothers and sisters and it seems to me some of Aunt Julie's chidldren are buried in the same cemetery in Iowa. From another letter from Blanche ANDERSON to her cousin, Don Cox.
Of Harlon HIATT she says, he married 4 times, left one son, Lewis HIATT of Nebraska. Long sinse passed away. She also said that one of our Quaker Ancestors married into the Miami Tribe with the Chief being Godfrey. From Helen (Hiatt) Allen's letter dated August 27, 1975:
Most of my information came from Uncle Sherman, Grandpa HIATT's brother. He told me a lot when he visited in Indiana from Long Beach each summer. Yes, he said their grandmother was a Miami Indian Squaw. David HIATT and Jane Butler were the ones I started the "tree" with, and I suppose she assumed an English (American) name. Many Indians did, I understand. He said the HIATT name was originally Von HIATT (he pronounced it he - ott) and that two brothers came from Holland, one settling in Ohio, the other going on into Indiana near Wabash.

b. 10-5mo-1812, Highland Co., Ohio; d. 1841, Henry Co., Indiana; m. in Henry Co., Indiana, 13-5mo-1832 (Duck Creek Mo. Mtg.), to (404.) REBECCA HIATT, d/o (81.) William and Elizabeth (----). Hiatt; b. 23-12mo-1810, NC. (Anthony Hiatt and Rebecca Hiatt were second cousins, their grandfathers being brothers.) (She m. (2nd). in 1852, to Nathan Hunt. See No. (404.) ).CH: (1073.) 1850 Census, Wayne Twp., Henry Co., Indiana: Rebecca Hiatt, 39, NC.; Calvin, 14, Ind., Idiotic; Daniel, 12; Thomas, 10; Elvira Williams, 18, NC.
In 1943 J. Edgar Hiatt, a grandson of Anthony Hiatt, wrote: "I never saw my grandfather Anthony, who died in 1841, at the age of 28, when my father was only 10. As I recall the story, he was carrying a pig (butchered I suppose)., to a neighbor's, and slipped on the ice, and died from the effects of the fall."
Later he wrote: "I find since writing you… that my grandfather Anthony died in 1841; so my father was but three years old at the time(instead of 10, as stated in my previous letter). as he was born in 1838…. My g.father and g.mother, Anthony and Rebecca, had five children; William, Calvin, Daniel, Mary and Thomas….G.grandfather Absalom had twelve children: David, Aaron, Phebe, James, Hiram, Joseph, Hannah, Absalom, Cornelius, Anthony (my g.f.), Jane and Daniel. All I know of my grandmother Hiatt's family (Rebecca Hiatt)., is that she had one brother (I think he was a half-brother)., Thomas, and what you already have, that she was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Hiatt."
Further: "My grandmother Rebecca's birthday was in Dec. I think; - probably Dec. 23, as you mention. I also think again that her father's name was William. Her second marriage was to Nathan Hunt. Her half-brother Thomas, who lived in Hancock Co., Ind., died many years ago. He married Mary ? (I can not recall her maiden name; my brother may remember. My g.f. and g.m. were cousins; whether 1st, I do not know." (R99).
