(1) Colonel Joseph B. Bibb was a distinguished lawyer. He served with
distinction in the C.S.A., he raised a company of volunteers, and went to
Mobile and seized Fort Morgan and garrisoned it. When the State of Alabama
seceded, he returned to Montgomery, and with Colonel Beck, raised the 23rd
Alabama Regiment, of which he became Lieutenant Colonel, and on the death of
Colonel Beck, succeeded to the command of the Regiment, serving in all of the
Campaigns of the western army in Mississippi. He was with General Bragg in
the Kentucky Campaign; with General Joseph E. Johnston in the Dalton Campaign;
Hood in his Nashville raid, and at the reorganization of the army served with
General Johnston in North Carolina, surrendering with that commander at
Greensborough.
(1) Dr. W.G.Bibb was educated at the University of Georgia and the University
of Alabama, graduating from the latter in the class of 1872. He was a medical
student at the University of Virginia in 1876, and at the University of
Nashville and Vanderbilt University from 1876 to 1877. He was valedictorian
of his class in 1877. He then studied in Paris, and visited the hospitals
there. He returned to New York, and in 1878, graduated from the Bellevue
Hospital Medical College under Professors Austin Flint, Sr, and Jr. In 1878
he began practicing at Montgomery Alabama, in 1881 he moved to Nashville
Tennessee, where he occupied the chair in the University of Tennessee and
Nashville Medical College. In 1888 he returned to his old home in Montgomery,
where he continued to reside.
