Historical Notes:

(1) In 1793 the Governor of Virginia ordered Captain Caperton to organize a
company of New River Valley men to march against the Indians in the Kanawha
Valley.  This was done with a few skirmishes but no battle.  They guarded the
frontier and protected the settlers and their homes.  Members of that company
included Drury, Sr., his uncle Matthew Farley and his brothers Edward and
Francis.

(2) After their marriage in about 1795 Drury Farley and his wife Mary settled
on Buffalo Run where they lived until about 1799 when they moved to Beech
Spring near the top of Shockley's Hill.  Drury died in 1851 in Summers County
at the age of 81.

Gideon FARLEY

(1) Gideon Farley was a Private in the War of 1812. He served from September
13th, 1812, to January 27th, 1814, and received $8.00 a month for his services.
He was discharged for "sickness" and received $4.80 for transportation to
Monroe, a total of 370 miles.

He moved to Big Coal River, then in Kanawha County, before 1830.  The branch
where they settled is still called Gidd's Branch.  Gideon appeared as head of
household in 1830 Kanawha County census.  They were the parents of seven
children.
