(1) The wife of the first son of Hugh de Courtenay, Hugh, by the name of
Elizabeth has apparently been confused with the wife of their son Hugh who was Elizabeth de Brian, thus the surname of Hugh's wife is not known, only her give name Elizabeth.(2) The order of birth of the sons with respect to each other, and the
daughters with respect to each other is in harmony with the Visitations of
Cornwall and Devonshire, partially arbitrary, except that the record claims
William, Archbishop, was born abt 1342, that Hugh was born on date given, and
in as much as Margaret was married to her husband likely as early as 1331, it
is presumed he must be the oldest child.(3) It is known Powderham was given to Hugh de Courtenay and his wife, by
Humphrey de Bohun, but it would appear that they did not live there, and that
it first became the family seat of Courtenay when it was given to Sir Philip
Courtenay by his parents.(4) All the sources quoted state that this couple had 8 sons and 9 daughters,
but in the Visitations of Cornwall and Devonshire the Daughters are numbered
from one to seven, number eight is skipped, and the last two daughters named
are given numbers nine and ten. It is not known whether this is intentional or a mistake, but inasmuch as a daughter Anne was also claimed for this family. Most of the above sources state Catherine Courtenay married, William Lord Harrington, as her first husband, but there is a note in Westcote's Devonshire, page 571, stating that this is an error, and that her first husband is actually William Mohun. See also the Complete Peerage, Vol. 6, page 319.
