Elizabeth SHIELDS

Birth dates for Elizabeth Shields and her brother Samuel suggest the probability of an error. Forsyth County burial records show Elizabeth was born 26 November 1811. The marker at Samuel's grave shows he was born 13 June 1812.

Elizabeth Shields and Thomas Rich had no children, but they reared several orphans.

Samuel SHIELDS

See note under Elizabeth Shields for the probability of an error in birth dates.

Samuel Shields was a county commissioner for Bartholomew County, Indiana in 1861 and 1865. He moved to Bartholomew in 1830 and lived near Columbus until his death.

Elizabeth ROBERTS

Family records indicate Samuel Shields married Elizabeth Roberts, but the marriage record shows her name as Elizabeth Abbett. Living with her and Samuel Shields at the time of the 1850 census were there own cildren and Elizabeth Roberts, 16, b. Kentucky, and John W. Roberts, 12, b. Kentucky. These could be children from her first marriage or they could be younger siblings. Members of the Mount Pleasant Church included both Abbett and Roberts families.
