Hortense Shields Biggs writes in "Family of Dudley Shields et al." that John Shields and Mary Ann, who was called Mollie, married at Little Rock and remained there until their son William Sherman Shields was 14 years old, at which time William moved to Illinois. His parents moved the following year. Mrs. Biggs says that John Shields was in Company I, 54th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was a corporal when he was mustered out in 1865. He was a member of General Sherman's march to the sea. During the war, he also suffered a bayonet wound to the wrist and was a prisoner at Andersonville.
