Herbert Hastings died at age 27. He never married.
Sophina Hastings Echols wrote: "Uncle Herb was stripping tobacco one day in November 1903 when his old friend Rufus Robinson, who lived near the old Nicholson Mill, came by and wanted him to go to Kernersville with him. Uncle Herb said he'd go when the tobacco was finished. Robinson helped finish the tobacco, and they drove off to town in the buggy.
"Some time during their stay in Kernersville and a few too many drinks, Robinson stabbed Uncle Herb in the stomach. It was never known why as the only witness, Cabel Echols, would never talk and carried the secret to his grave. At any rate, whatever the trouble was, it must have been minor for they left for hom together in the buggy.
"Onthe way home, Robinson got uneasy as Uncle Herb was bleeding badly,s o they stopped at an old barn beside the road near where Dan Williard now lives this side of Kernersville. Here Robinson got in his buggy and took off, first toing to an uncle's house near Walkertown, where he left the buggy and horse, and then into hiding in another state (West Virginia).
"Uncle Herb walked the 2 1/2 miles home, where he took gangrene and died a few days later after being carried to Salem in a wagon to the hospital.
"Uncle Herb had hitched up the buggy in Kernersville prior to starting home as there was blood on the harness when the horse and buggy were found at the home of Robinson's uncle.
"Robinson was tried and sentenced. He served 10 years and was paroled. A few years later, he was killed when hit by a train."
