At the time of his father's will, Samuel Shields had moved from North Carolina, probably to Indiana. By the 1850 census, Hannah Johnson Shields had returned to Forsyth County, North Carolina and was living near other members of the Shields family. Sandra Bryant suggests Samuel died about 1842 or soon thereafter as that is the birth date of the youngest child.
Hannah Johnson Shields appears in the 1850 census of Forsyth County and again in the 1860 census with only Andrew at home. She is not in the 1870 census and may have died or moved away with married children. The 1850 census shows Hannah and all of her children born in North Carolina, but this could be error.
