Glen Arthur Shields passed away 27 May 2006. Cause of death was cancer. It began as prostrate cancer, and although it was treated successfully at first it returned and eventually spread throughout his body. As was his request, Glen was cremated. The ashes were delivered to his spouse, Colleen, to be scattered in the mountains. A memorial service, presided over by a Christian Science minister, was conducted on Friday, 2 June at Advantage Mortuary, 6425 West Alameda, Lakewood, CO. Glen was 87 and is survived by his spouse Colleen; five sons, Stephen, Allen, Craig, Kent and Kevin; a stepdaughter, Karen Zoltenko; thirteen grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Marjorie had heart valve replacement surgery on 22 December 2000. The surgery proved more complicated than expected and as a result there were complications, one of which was that her kidneys failed. During dialysis, at 3:38 in the afternoon of 2 January 2001, her heart stopped and would not restart. Marjorie remained in the hospital between her surgery and her death.
Her obituary was published in the 4 January 2001 edition of the Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper. "Survivors include her husband, F. Marion VanSickle of Fort Collins; five sons, F. Stephen Shields of Raleigh/Durham, N.C., Allen Shields and Kevin Shields of Fort Collins, Craig Shields of Salt Lake City, and Kent Shields of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a stepson, Ron VanSickle of Denver; two stepdaughters, Marilyn Heath of Tallahassee, Fla., and Peggy Griffith of Fort Collins; a sister, Mildred Bissell of Greenfield, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Five brothers and sisters preceded her in death."
She was cremated at the Reager Funeral Home and Crematory in Fort Collins, Colorado. Her husband, Van, will retain her ashes until he passes. Their combined ashes will then be dispersed from a favorite mountain peak overlooking Fort Collins.
A memorial service was conducted at 1:00 PM at the Reager Funeral Home on 6 January 2001. The Reverend Scott Herr of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Collins officiated. Kevin Shields, Marjorie's youngest son, spoke the following in her memory as part of the service:
"It is an unfortunate reality for a lot of us, I think, that we do not adequately express our appreciation for our family or our friends while they are with us and while we have that opportunity. In reflecting back about Mom's life, I certainly realize that to be true of me with regard to her, but I know she would not have wanted me to stand before you and talk about regrets. Instead, I'd like to share a few thoughts and memories.
My brother Steve said to me that all her sons knew a different Mother and although it took a few moments to realize what he meant by that, I now understand that he is quite right. Due to our age differences and circumstances in life taking us to different parts of the country, and sometimes different parts of the world, each of us has seen Mother more closely at different times in her life, and although we do have different perspectives about her, I think we would all agree that she devoted her life to being a wife and mother, and by virtue of that, she devoted her life to being a giver. She was a giver in so many ways.
Mom was one of those rare people in the world who was completely unselfish, completely non-self centered-completely humble. During my lifetime I remember her always being involved as a volunteer in various organizations. I remember her making meals to take to families that needed help for one reason or another, and doing that during a time in her life where it was all she could do to provide for her own family. I remember her always being willing to help a friend or a neighbor. I remember her never saying an unkind word about anybody. I remember how she would plan ahead for the next visit by one of her sons, or stepchildren, coming in from out of town, how she would fill the freezer with food she had prepared in advance, and I remember how her face would light up when whoever it was that was visiting would get there, especially how it would light up when her grandchildren visited.
Although she never said anything arrogant about her own abilities, I remember her to be an excellent cook, expert baker, and an expert seamstress. I remember her making clothing for herself, her family and her grandchildren that could be accurately described as professional quality. I remember her to be an avid gardener and I remember her to be a homemaker that never stopped working to provide a loving home for her husband and family. I remember being given a job and being told by the man that hired me that if I were anything like my mom he would be glad to have me.
Most of all, I remember that Mom loved us. Each of us as individuals, although there have been times in our lives when she may have been disappointed in one of us. I remember her saying to me once that, "Kevin, no matter what, you will always be my son and I'll always love you." I remember her saying about her husband, my stepfather, Van, that she loved him deeply and respected him deeply and that her years spent with him were the happiest of her life.
I remember saying to her before the heart surgery that if she did not make it through the surgery I'd see her when I got there, and I remember her response that said-like only a Mother could-"just make sure you get there."
So, I'll conclude by remembering one more thing, and that is what Mom believed, as stated by Jesus and as recorded in the Gospel of John; 'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.'"
At Marjorie's request, the following poem appeared in the folder distributed at the ceremony. It was read aloud by her granddaughter, Jenny Shields, immediately following Kevin's memorial.
"Do not stand at my grave and weep:
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's
Hush, I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at
Night. Do not stand at my grave
And cry; I am not there.
I did not die." 2 _SDATE 1 JUL 1938

BURIAL:
Cremated: BET 5 OCT 2002 AND 12 OCT 20021. Glenn A. Shields, From a letter dated 12 Oct 2002.
Ray Shields' daughter Marj said in a 1996 conversation with Steve (Francis S.) Shields that "Perk still smokes like a chimney. She is really a heavy smoker, but she doesn't drink anymore."
Perk talked about moving back to Massena, but Marj and her mother Bessie agreed that she would never have been happy. "In Payson, AZ, she has golf all year around. There is a place for old people needing help not too far from where she lives. Perk says that's where she will go when she can't live alone anymore."
According to Bessie, Perk and Roy fought all of the time. She would get mad at him and just get out of the car in downtown San Francisco. She kept talking about a divorce, and Roy finally said, "why don't you just go to Reno and get one of those six week divorces?" Perk went to Reno and came back in two weeks. Roy was an easy going man.
