Was an attorney and was educated at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

He was at times the light of his father's life; at others a disappointment to him.  8 January 1833, his father wrote to him: "My son, you had better read the enclosed paper concerning integerty frequently and practic its precepts constently. It is a sufficient monetar for you conduct in life. Do not spend you life in idelness & bad company. Yours John Tipton."
