Jesse Cain was a store clerk and taught school at Nodaway, Missouri, where he bought a 240-acre farm. At 21, he returned to Jennings County, Indiana, where he farmed and owned a lime business. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in Company A, 24th Indiana Volunteers and was soon promoted to first lieutenant. He was killed 16 may 1863 while acting as captain at Champion Hill, near Vicksburg, Mississippi.

James Sevier Shields was a physician. He practiced with his brother John in 1853-54 in Seymour, Indiana and then moved to Mitchell, Indiana. In 1856, he was the physician for the construction company that was building the Ohio and Michigan Railroad. He practiced also in Cortland, Medora and Hamilton County, Indiana and operated a drug store which he sold after the 1860s.
