John went with his parents to Indiana about 1818. They settled east of Salem in Washington County, where John married Deborah Coffin and had 16 children.
Deborah Coffin Shields' ancestry is traced to 1066 when Sir Richard Coffin accompanied William the Conqueror on his invasion of England. Sir Richard received as a reward the manor at Alwington in the County of Devonshire.
In 1642, Tristram Coffin moved to Salisbury Massachusetts and, along with eight other men, bought Nantucket Island from the resident Indians. The island was not very fertile, and just before the Revolution, a large group of Quakers moved to Guilford County, North Carolina.
Deborah Coffin Shields' cousin Levi Coffin provided refuge, food and moral support in his home for some 3,000 runaway slaves headed for Canada and freedom. Slave hunters nicknamed Levi President of the Underground Railroad.
In later life, Levi Collins wrote "Reminiscences of Levi Coffin," in which he recounted his experiences. (Note that David Shields, father of Jacob Edwards Shields, assisted Levi Collins in helping slaves escape to Canada.)
