Valentine Garner. Prominent among the worthy tillers of the soil and stock men of Webster Co., Missouri, who deserve honorably mention, is Mr.Garner, who was born in North Carolina, December 10, 1813. His parents, John and Susannah (Hall) Garner, were born in the North Carolina also, and in 1816-1818 settled in Tennessee, and after residing in Wilson Co., of that state, for a number of years, moved to Illinois, where both parents and three grown children died of cholera in the fall of 1834. Valentine Garner accompanied his parents to Illinois in 1831, and is next to the youngest of ten children, he and his brothers William and Wiley, sisters Poly Taylor, Sarah Blurton, Leannah Taylor and Elizabeth Trinkle were the surviving memUbers of the family. Valentine came to Missouri in 1834 and December 31 of that same year. He married Sarah Edington, who was born and reared in Tennessee. Her father, James Edington, was one of the early pioneers of the county. Mr. and Mrs. Garner spent the winter of their marriage in Illinois and the following May returned to Webster Co., Missouri where they resided until Sarah's death in 1851. Valentine purchased raw land (346 acres) on which he erected a house in 1840, and now has 200 acres of his farm cleared and well improved. In 1852 Valentine Garner married Miss Rebecca Shields, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Shahan Shields. His marriages have been blessed in the birth of the following children: Nancy, wife of George Linn, of California; John, also residing in CA; William, who resides in Webster Co., ; Martha, wife of Benjamin Shields, of Webster Co.; Dialtha, wife of P.D. Grigsby, of CA; Frances, wife of John Shook, of Webster Co.;Mary, wife of W.P. Letchworth; Anna, wife of Jones Mackey; James and George, both of whom are married and reside in Webster Co., and Julia, who is the wife of Robert Chaffin. The following children are deceased: Jane, Susan, Amanda, and Sarah.
