Ezekiel Logan SHIELDS

Steve Shields gives Ezekiel Shields' date of birth as 20 May 1822. Ezekiel was a farmer. When his mother died in 1824, Ezekiel and his sister and brother were taken to Madison, Indiana to be under the care of some of their father's first family. Margaret Wilson Shields' children would have nothing to do with Amanda Logan Shields' family. Eventually, the half-sister Nancy Agnes (who married James Elliott) accepted Sarah Jane. The two boys were left with their Madison relatives. In 1826, their father died. Jessee, then 6, and Ezekiel, 4, were put in a covered wagon and started to their mother's relatives. Jesse escaped, and the wagon went on, delivering Ezekiel to his uncle, Wilson H. Logan, on Walnut Ridge. Jesse found his way back to Madison and was taken in later by Nancy Agnes, who reared him with his sister Sarah Jane.

Ezekiel Logan Shields, the second son of William and Amanda, was born May 20, 1822 in Washington Co., Ind.  He married Elizabeth Jane Elliott April 3, 1848.  In 1871 he brought his family to Jackson Co., Kansas, eventually settling at what is now known as Shields Grove, nine miles southwest of Holton, Kansas.  Like all the pioneer settlers of Kansas, he met with reverses in the way of drouths, grasshoppers, cyclones and extortionate rates of interest.  Shield’s grove, known and seen from miles around, is a grove of fine maple trees set out on the highest point in Jackson County.  His remains are buried in the Holton Cemetery.
