Notes

Abel SHIELDS

Abel settled in Rowan County, North Carolina on the Yadkin River.

Many Quakers and Baptists from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, including some of the Stalkers and Lewellings from Kent County and some of the Shieldses from Rockingham County, emigrated to the Yadkin Settlements between 1760 and 1780, seeking religious tolerance and relief from burdensome taxes. Several Coffin families from Nantucket Island, Massachusetts settled in North Carolina at about the same time. The most important Quaker-Baptist settlement was in western Guilford County, some 40 miles northeast of Rowan County, and evidently the Abel Shields family later moved there as the deaths of Abel and his wife Grace are recorded at Kernersville, North Carolina.

Sandra Bryant says Abel Shields was born in Kent County, Delaware and died in Stokes County, North Carolina.

Grace FREEMAN

Sandra Bryant says Grace Freeman was born in Kent County, Delaware and died in Stokes County, North Carolina.

Daniel SHIELDS

According to John A. Shields, Daniel and one of his sons were killed in 1690 while fighting for King James II at the Battle of the Boyne. John Shields says one of Daniel's sons "later became a high official in the Spanish army and was for a time governor general of Cuba."

Daniel reconverted to Catholicism and remained in Ireland, as did his descendants for two generations.

According to Judge Littell, the name is improperly given as Daniel. He says it was David.

From "Daniel Shields of County Antrim, Ireland and His Descendants in America" by Robert J. Shields (Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, US/CAN 929.273): Daniel Shields, the next to youngest of William's sons, grew up to become an officer in the army of King James II and was killed in battle in 1690 across the river from Boyne, Ireland ("The Battle of Boyne"). In this battle, the forces of King James II were defeated by the Protestant army of William III. Daniel's son is said to have gone to Spain, where he married into royalty and became a member of the court. He later became governor general of Cuba. General James Shields, who achieved fame as a senator from three different states (Illinois, Minnesota and Missouri) and fought in the Mexican and Civil Wars, is descended from Daniel. General James Shields is also known for the "duel" he fought with Abraham Lincoln over a practical joke instigated by Mary Todd, whom Lincoln was courting at the time. The "duel" came to naught, While the seconds were arguing over protocol, Lincoln and Shields conferred, Lincoln apologized, and they made their peace.

From "The Family of Dr. Seth Wesley and Isabelle Brown Shields," by John A. Shields, Ethel Shields Cummings and Margaret Shields Heller (1951): Daniel was killed at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690; his son became identified with the Spanish army and was subsequently the governor general of Cuba; his grandson settled in America and founded a numerous Catholic Shields family, the most prominent of his line being General James Shields, of Mexican and Civil War fame, personal and political enemy of Abraham Lincoln, and at various times a United States senator from Illinois, Minnesota and Missouri. He is buried at Carrollton, Missouri.
Daniel died about 1690 at the Battle of Boyne, Ireland.  For more information see genealogical history as deposited with the LDS Church History Dpt..
