This information on the Taylor Family line was received from Phebe Taylor Kapple who recieved it from Rose Hiatt Tervort, Payson, UT.  The family dates back to the 10th century, coming from Normandy with William the Conqueror.  The descendants today in England being the Earl of Pennington.  Your American progenitor, James Taylor, born in 1615 at Carlisle, England, twenty miles from the Pennington Manor, was the youngest son of the Earl of Pennington, another member of the family becoming the Lord of Hare Castle.  On the female side was Martha Thomson, the granddaughter of Sir Roger Thompson, who was secretary of the Virginia Colony under Cromwell.  This Martha Thompson and James Taylor the 2nd were progenitors of five presidents of the United States, namely - James Madison, Zachary Taylor, Wm. H. Harrison, Benjamin Harrison, and John Tyler.  Your ancestor who served in the war of 1776 was Joseph Taylor, born 1751 in Virginia in Ante Bellum days -- later family members intermarried with the first families of Virginia.  Some were leaders in the Revolution, most prominent ones from Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, North and South Carolina.  Shelton ward is a suburb of Mt. Airy, 8 or 10 miles to the east.  The burial plot referred to on the Scott homestead is nestled among the pines and trees about a halt a mile from the old home or house where my mother Jarmelia Scott grew up.  Buried in this plot are grandfather Jarrot Scott and his two wives Permelia Thomas and Sarah Evans; also some sons and daughters, whose names we could not read as the markers were chiseled from red sandstone and storms over the years had washed away all the markings.  We could not have known who they were except for the wife of grandfather's youngest son Jarrot, Arminda Hiatt Scott, the only living member of the family who could identify them.  We were grateful for her help.  She has since passed on.  The Taylor burial plot is located on the old Taylor farm, a few hundred yards from the house, however, the old home was replaced by a new one--probably fifty years old when we were there.  In this cemetery were family members from several generation back, and the markers or tombstones were in fairly good condition, however, graves and markers were almost hidden by weeds.  This information is authentic because I made the trip myself back to all places of interest in 1935, and found firsthand information.....Nettie T Christensen

Benjamin Sr. TAYLOR

Benjamin purchased 200 acres of land in Brunswick County in 1798 and he was listed as a resident of Lunenburg Co. at that time and the property was adjoining that of Daniel Taylor, his older brother.  .  He lived there until 1813 as the court records show that he made a deed to all of his property in Brunswick in Nov 12, 1812 to John Williams, his Father-in-law.
...In the year 1813, Benjamin, son of Thomas Taylor III (1750-1821) moved to Surry Co. and bought 100 acres of land from Richard Puckett near Westfield.   On this farm along side Flat Shoal Creek, Ben was a successful farmer, as he sold his original land holding in 1819 and bought other parcels of land over a period of 13 years.  Benjamin made his home on a farm he purchased from E. Harris on Stoney Creek in 1825.

There were other Taylors that moved to Surry co. about the same time ...Some were land purchasers locally and others migrated elsewhere, largely to Utah when they embraced the Mormon Faith.   A nephew Thomas purchased 89 acres in 1814 on the sounth side of Toms Creek and the sale by Benjamin in 1819 was to Sussanah Taylor, widow of William Taylor, older brother of Benjamin. James the oldest son sesttled on a farm he purchased in 1837 on Toms Creek.  Thomas settled on the Westfield-Mt. Airy road and was known as Road Tom; Elizabeth married her cousin, Thomas, who was known as Ridge Tom--as they lived in the Chestnut Ridges;  Lucinda married Iredell Venable, who was the father of Milton Venable and ancestor of the Venables in our family.   Benjamin has been given the credit of giving Stony Creek its name... The 1850 census shows Benjamin as having 3 slaves with only Rebecca (27) at home along with a 15 year old boy named Riley WARDEN.  Benjamin died in 1853 and was buried in the Old Taylor Graveyard on the some farm.  His wife, Nancy and several of their childred are also buried there.  This graveyard is located on the late Ashby Hiatt's farm.  Ben Tucker owns  and lives on the property now...

In the records of Brunswick Co., VA, we find in the settlement of the estate of John Williams that Nancy Williams Taylor and her husband Benjamin of Surry Co. ,NC participated in a suit against Benjamin Wilkinson, Adminr. of John Williams estate.  This is recorded in Order Book 35, p. 538.     Place of death also given as Brunswick, VA.  Chris has noted that Benjamin was born in Lunenburg Co., Virginia.      Name: Benjamin TAYLOR
     Surname: Taylor
     Given Name: Benjamin
     Sex: M
Birth: 13 Jul 1780 in Lunenburg Co., VA
Death: 23 Oct 1853 in Surry Co., NC

     Note:
Information on this family from World Connect search, Ron Coleman. No primary source material given. Ron has descendant information for all children. Brunswick VA and Surry NC are each near the state line but not close to each other so the birth place for each child is curious. If accurate, it indicates frequent movement between the locations.

Marriage date is May 24 or 26, 1803.

"Heritage of Surry County North Carolina" Vol. 1, Part 3, 1983, story 702 by Alice Taylor Peele and Mae Taylor Powell and story 701 by Steve Taylor, contains information pertaining to a Daniel Taylor and  descendants. Both articles indicate that Benjamin is descentant of a Rev. Daniel Taylor born abt 1665 who settled in York Co. VA in 1703. He and his wife owned land in Surry Co. VA and served as Rector of Blissland Parrish Episcopal Church from 1704 to 1729. Sources sited in the article include bible records, gravestones and court records. These sources indicate that Daniel was the progenitor of our Taylor line but other sources I have found indicate that Thomas Taylor Sr. who died 1744 in Surry Co. VA is the progenitor.

Benjamin and family moved to Surry Co., NC in 1813 and purchased 100 acres of land from Richard Puckett on Flat Shoal Creek, near Westfield NC. There were several other Taylor families who moved to Surry Co. about the same time. Benjamin lived on a farm he purchased in 1825 from E. Harris on Stoney Creek. He is buried in the Taylor Cemetery on this farm as are his wife Nancy and several of their children.

"Surry County, NC, Will Book 5 - 1853-1868" page 3 contains the will of Benjamin containing names of his living children. Daniel had taken care of his parents and Benjamin gave the 90 acres where Benjamin lived in compensation. He left his property to his wife Nancy.

.Some were land purchasers locally and others migrated elsewhere, largely to Utah when they embraced the Mormon Faith. One of them, David Rufus Taylor became one of the Elders of the Mormon Church and another cousin, Daniel Haymore became a big rancher in New Mexico.

{WILLIAM HIATT SELLS LAND IN PREPARATION TO EMIGRATE TO OHIO
William and Sarah Hiatt continued to work this land growing enough food for their sustenance until 26th of August 1829 when he sold 100 acres to Benjamin Taylor for $200.  Benjamin Taylor would later become a relative through marriage.
Benjamin Taylor had a daughter by the name of Elizabeth Taylor who later married Sterling Taylor.  Elizabeth and Sterling Taylor were the parents of Mary Taylor who married William Hiatt, the son of Jesse Hiatt mentioned above.  So this Stoney Creek property was owned by the Taylors as well as the Hiatts both of whom are our ancestors.
  The property is located on Sheep Farm Road which intersects with Hollow Road shown on the map on page 163 (obtained from the Surry Community College  Library in Dobson) and on page 19 sent to me by Delia Sechrest or Ella Gammons.).  It is also interesting to note that "Hollow Road" called the "Main Wagon Road", most likely is the Great Wagon Road which was greatly traveled from 1740 to 1800 and took the Hiatts from Philadelphia to Yadkin River.}
