(4290.)  JOHN TALBERT HIATT (2335.)  (843.)  (228.)  (38.)  (4.)  (1.):
b. 1876; living 1944 at Moravia, Iowa; unmarried. Mr. Hiatt has contributed much to this volume on his own line as well as on other branches of the family; he has also written many poems, one of which appears below:

THE HIATTS,  HYATTS,  HIETTS,  ETC.

The Hiatts are of Norman blood,
And English by consent.
They came here many years ago,
And here we are content.

To spell the name, some use the “y”,
And some the “I” and “e”,
, all are right and none are wrong,
It’s always -- HIATT -- you see.

The old ones were of Quaker faith,
Both women and the men,
True to all the principles,
Of our noted William Penn.

They strived and toiled and labored hard,
To build themselves a home,
And left it for us younger ones,
That we might never roam.

They came here for their liberties,
And freedom of their views,
And left to us a heritage,
That we should not abuse.

When the Hiatts came to Iowa,
‘Bout one hundred years ago,
They came to get a homestead,
As most of us well know.

They got their land of Uncle Sam,
And started raising hogs,
Built fences with brush, and some with rails,
And houses out of logs.

The oxen team was all the go,
Back in that early day,
And scythe and cradle cut the grain,
There was no other way.

They raised some cattle and some sheep,
And chickens too, I say,
Helped build their neighbors house and barn,
And never asked for pay.

The men folks sheared the wool from sheep,
And stored it in the barn,
The women washed and carded it,
And spun it into yarn.

They wove it into cloth for clothes,
And blankets for the bed,
Knit stockings for the tiny feet,
And hoods to wear on head.

The older Hiatts were fond of sport,
And hunting was a treat,
Their tables often were supplied,
With deer and turkey meat.

Some Hiatts now, are settled here,
And some are settled there,
Some are on the ocean,
And some took to the air.

If all the Hiatts of this world,
Were gathered here to-day,
I don’t know what we’d do with them,
Nor where they’d have to stay.

But we could do our best to find,
A place for their repose,
That they might get their slumber o’er,
Before the sun arose.

Composed by -- John Talbert Hiatt Moravia, Iowa. (R70).
