(1) Captain William Eastin English was in the Indiana House of Representatives and Senate; He was Member of Congress; on General Wheeler's Staff in the Spanish American War, and was severely wounded at Santiago; He was author of "History of Masonry in Indianapolis."
Captain English never drew any pay, and after the close of the Spanish
American War, a cheque for the amount due him was sent by the government; he
returned the cheque saying "I served my country, for my country's sake, not for money." The amount was turned into the United States treasury and became part of its miscellaneous receipts. This is said to be the only instance of the kind on record, excepting that of General Washington, who never received pay for his services.
