                     Dr. Joseph John Copeland
Dr. Joseph J. Copeland, 82, dies; Led City College in Turbulent Eara of City College at the height of racial turbulence there in May 1969, died of pneumonia on Thursday at the Paul Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, N.J.  He was 82
years old and had moved to a retirement community in Lakewood from Mount Vernon, NY three years ago.

Dr. Copeland had been a teacher at the college for 41 years when he was asked to be acting president of the turmoil-wracked campus at Convent Avenue and 138th Street.  The college had been closed for two weeks after black and
Peurto Rican Students had barricaded themselves in buildings.

Dozens of fires had been set, and classes for 20,000 students had been disrupted by rampaging minority students and their white supporters demanding a separate black and Puerto Rican studies program and a new admission polices to guarantee that half the entering freshman class would be minority students.
The son of an Indiana Quaker minister, Dr. Copeland who earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1936 was asked to take the post of Dr. Buell G. Gallagher.  Dr. Gallagher had been scheduled to resign at the end of the
semester, but he asked to be relieved of his duties immediately.
                   "We Will Have Law, Order"

The college was an armed camp, with police officers outnumbering students.  Dr. Copeland refused to accede to demands that the police be removed before negotiations resumed and said that although he was sympathetic to some of the students demands the police would stay as long as needed.

"We will have law, order, peace, harmony," he said on his first day in office.  "At the same time we will work as diligently and as rapidly as we are able to rectify the shortcoming that may have existed here in the past."

Talks resumed, and the Board of Higher Education later accelerated plans for admission for any city high school graduate and authoriz3ed departments of urban and ethnic studies at five colleges, including City College.

ca 1900 Hebrew Torah Scroll Quaker Albert Luther Copeland HIATT Genealogy

This scroll is an AMAZING find! It has so much history. I have done extensive research on the name of the individual that owned this scroll. It would not have been uncommon for a Quaker to have a scroll such as this. Albert appears to have been very well educated in his theological studies. He seems to have dedicated his life to his religion and sharing it with others. First off this scroll has been used. The box is in somewhat rough condition. I have unrolled most of the scroll and it really does look great for its age. There is some wear. One section has a torn piec and another has a rip both shown in the pictures. There are two very very old (small) pieces of tape on one spot. It is not so delicate that you can not handle it. It can easily be unrolled and looked at. The "tones" in the ink on the box appears to be old. The box that the scroll is in measures 6 1/4 inches long. This is not a huge scroll. The text is very small and the scroll is VERY long. Appears to be wood handles. I believe the paper may be velum. It may contain other small imperfections. I did not unroll it completely. I probably unrolled three quarters of it.  Rev. Albert Luther Copeland Birth: 19 OCT 1874 in Bridgeport, Indiana Death: 25 APR 1971 in Mt. It appears after he went to Sabina, Ohio he returned to Paoli, Indiana and was Pastor at Friends Church. Albert appears to have been a very well respected and educated man. He is mentioned in several articles online.   Based on research Alice Hiatt geneaology has ties to famous figures such as George Washington, Daniel Boone, Davy Crocket, Buffalo Bill amoung many others.
