William Ashford KIDWELL Rev.

William  was buried next to his sister, Nancy (Kidwell) Bethel, in Bethel
Ridge Cem. Athens Co., Ohio.  He was listed as a Reverend on his towbstone.  In Hampshire Co., he  was called Ashford, which was his middle name.  Tax records show that he emigrated from Hampshire County in 1835.  Apparently, he returned in 1848-49, just after his father's death, but then went back to Ohio.  He was listed as a miller on the U.S. Censuses for Athens County, Ohio.  He married Susan ____, who was born in Virginia circa 1818.  THe 1880 census states that her father was born in Germany and her mother in Virgina.

Historical Notes:

John Kidwell was the progenitor of this surname in Hampshire County, West Virginia.  He was born circa 1752 in Prince Georges County, Maryland, and immigrated to Hampshire County Virginia sometime during the period 1799-1800, with his wife Eleanor (nee Hayes), his children, and a black slave.
John and Eleanor were married in Prince Georges County, Maryland on
January 5th 1785.  Eleanor (Hayes) Kidwell's brother and other relatives
immigrated to Hardy County, Virginia.
John Kidwell settled on an eastern slope of Sandy Ridge, on Fairfax land
grants that were previously issued to Thomas Kennedy and John Hiett.  He
accumulated 343 acres and operated a water-powered grist mill, which was
located on a bank of a stream then known as Sandy Lick Run and known today as
Cold Stream.
During the early 1800's a road was built between Evan Hiett's farm on
Sandy Ridge to Critton Hollow.  The road was not developed and maintained
during the 20th century, and only the remains of a wagon roadbed may be seen.
Along this road lived members of the Loy, McDonald, Hawkins, King, Hiett,
Williamson, Stone, Asberry, Deaver, Slane, and Kidwell families.
The Kidwells were predominantly farmers.  Hampshire County is not known
for its farm land.  Milling and part-time Christian ministries were other
occupational choices made by earlier generations.
Certain members of the family were interested in various kinds of clocks, during the early 19th century.  That interest is proven by inventories of personal properties in Hampshire County.
John Kidwell died circa 1846 in Hampshire County.  The burial plot of John and Ellen Kidwell is not known for certain.  A very old graveyard is located on a Sandy Ridge mountainside.  Graves are marked with field slates, but the stones are not inscribed.  A local resident calls it the "Hawkins graveyard."  Possibly members of the Kidwell family were buried there.
