Dear Brother and all of you,
We're all as well as usual and hope this will find you the same. We all
sympathize with you in your bereavance but no one knows what it is to lose a
companion unless they have been placed there themselves. I cannot say much to comfort your bleeding heart but only think your loss is her gain for she is You)* and all the rest of us are spared a little longer. Barker's head and mine are as white as a sheet and we look as though wee were seventy and feel so. Mrs. Maxmillan died about six weeks ago. She was sick for several weeks. Clanley Shuart has been very sick. They thought one spell that he could no get up again but I hear that he is better.
Please give our love to your children and tell them to write. Barker
never writes to anyone. He leaves it for Adaline and I.

There is a Burchard, Neb near Lincoln. The 1870 census record shows Ora L. Pickens as living in the Town of Bristol, Kenosha Co., Wis. at the age of 2 years with his family. His father, William W. Pickens, and his mother, Julia Ann Smith, were both living in Kenosha Co., in 1850, however, they hadn't married at that time, so I feel quite sure Ora was born in Kenosha Co. I haven't been able to find a marriage record for the couple.
According to the obituary of Florence E. Pickens, sister to Ora, her family moved from Wis. to Sullivan Co., Mo in 1874.
Elijah Albright and his family were already living in Sullivan Co., having moved there from Ohio around 1857. The two older Albright children were Andrew and Henry.
The Pickens family had only been in Mo a short time when Florence, Ora's older sister, married Henry Albright in Dec of 1874. Andrew Albright had previously married 1872 and asit turns out Ora Pickens marries Andrew Albrights oldest daughter, Katie,in 1889. Thus we see the connection between the Albrights and the Pickens.
The 1880 Sullivan Co., Mo. census shows that William Pickens family with only the three younger children living at home, Dinah and William having been born in Green City, Mo. after the family moved there. Ora is now twelve years old.
The Wm Pickens family are fist listed on the Pawnee Co.,Neb. Personal Property tax roll in 1888. So it would seem that they didn't live there very long before both, first Julia (1888) and then William (1889) passed away and were burid at the Burchard Cemetery. Julia's granddaughter told me that "Julia was out in the cabbage patch hoeing when she had a stroke and died."
According to the directions in Wm. Pickens Last Will and Testiment, Ora was given custody of his younger brother, William, and his sister, Dinah (alsocalled Dell). Since Ora's marriage record state he was from Neb. he must have been living with his parents at the time of his parents death. With the responsibility of his younger brother and sister it wasn't long until Ora married Katie Albright at the Residence of the Albrights in Mendota, Putnam Co., Mo. (June 15, 1889)COUNTY CLERK

Dear Ms. Stewart:I answer to your letter, I am enclosing the death
notice for William Pickens. Since the copy is so light,
I am not charging you for it. I was unable to locate a notice
about Julia A. Pickens's death. The Pickens family were not listed in the Buchard
area on the 1880 or the 1885 census. Since we have the
Pawnee County Personal Property Taxes we checked them and
found that the family is listed for the first time in 1888.
If you have further questions, please contact me again.Sincerely,

The lady from New Mexico: her direct line is Ora L. Pickens, not Arra L. Pickens. Also correct information on Julia Smith Pickens. Death dates incorrect - correct date is Aug. 6, 1888. I have dates on the other brothers and sisters also. Would you be interested?"...
