daughter.AN EARLY TRAIN RIDE
A short tiem before I was born, my father and his brother John, went to
Omaha, Neb. and took a job on a constuction gang helping build a new railroad.
My uncle John had one girl 2 years old and 1 boy 1 year old. My Aunt was very crude to the children. But as soon as they got to Omaha, my aunt had another boy named Dan.
Uncle John had to get the children away from his wife or she would have
killed them.
My mother would have stayed with the children in Omaha, but she had to
stay on the farm to take care of the horses, cattle, pigs, chickens & KIDS.
Bertha was 2 years old & I came knocking on the door a little later.
Almost as soon as Dan was born, they decided to send Uncle John's 3
children to my grandmother. My mother took a train to Omaha and as soon as Dan was one week old they decided to take a chance.
My mother was only 18 years old. She had never been on a train before. But they gathered all 5 babies and got them on the train for Kansas. They had 1 baby 1 week old, 1 baby 3 months old, (me), 1 boy 1 year old, 2 girls 2 years old. Soon 2 or 3 started to cry. I expect they were hungry. In fact, I expect all the babies were hungry. Several old ladies tried to help my mother keep them pacified, but no luck. No one had anything to feed babies.
One old lady looked at Dan and me for some time, then she asked my mother
if we were twins. My mother said no. There were 3 months differnce in our
age. Before that all the women had been talking at once trying to find out how to keep the children from crying and how to do it.

Esther Pounds was born June 20, 1914 in Lincoln, NE. She was the daughter of Pearl E. Anderson and Vina M. Chubbuck Anderson who have both preceded her in death. She went home to be with her Lord on December, 28, 2010. She married Earl L. Pounds on June 25, 1930; they had 4 children, Earl Pounds Jr., R’Neill Wells, Arleta Rice, Patricia Carey, and 1 chosen daughter, Jean Portis. She will be missed by her 14 Grandchildren, 19 Great-grandchildren, 7 Great-great grandchildren and all of those wonderful friends who loved her dearly.
Esther loved to travel and managed to travel the world leading groups to a total of 41 countries. She led trips to the Holy Land 39 times and each time loved it more than the time before.
Esther’s life has been spent in service to her Lord. She was saved at 9 years of age and spent her early years at Lafayette Park Baptist Church. For 43 years she served alongside her husband as faithful pastor’s wife. After his death, Esther became Single Adult and Senior Adult Director at First Baptist Church, Arnold, MO. She served in that role for 16 years before retiring at age 86. After retirement she continued ministering to others, sending cards and letters of encouragement to make others feel special and loved.
She has seen many of those she has taught through the years continue the pattern of Godly love and service to others. She is known at First Baptist as Queen Esther by those who loved and honor her.
Queen Esther was an exceptional lady who made everyone feel special, she will be missed by her loving family and the many she has embraced with her loving spirit. She eagerly sought her departure to her heavenly home and longs for all of you to join her there.

J. J. Hewitt (Shorty)HOLTON - John James (Shorty) Hewitt, 82, Holton, died Friday in a hospital
here. He had been seriously injured in a two car collision on US-75 about a
mile north of here last Oct. 21 and later had been hospitalized in Topeka.
Mr. Hewitt had served as probate judge in Jackson County six years and also
served briefly as the Holton Police judge.
He was born June 16, 1891, at Carbondale, the son of J.B. and Lizzie
Hewitt, and lived most of his life in the Hoyt and Mayetta communities. He
lived in Holton the past 10 years. He formerly had been employed by teh State
Dept. of Revenue in Topeka.
He was a member of teh First United Methodist Church at Holton, Hoyt Lodge
No. 327, AF&AM, at Hoyt, and the Topeka Consistory, Scottish Rite. He also was
a member of the Hoyt Chapter No. 189, Order of Eastern Star, at Hoyt and the
IOOF Lodge at Holton.
He was married to Effie M. Anderson on March 15, 1915. She died Jan. 10,
1931. he was married to Nellie Nitzman on June 14, 1941. She survives.
Other survivors inlcude two daughters, Mrs. Zella Rickel, 1229 N. Monroe,
Topeka, and Mrs. Zola Johnson, Mayetta; a son Jay B. Hewitt, Mayetta, a
stepdaughter, Mrs. Eula Lisher, 5462 W. 12th Terr., Topeka, a stepson, Neil
Nuzman, Neodeshva; three sisters, MRs. Minerva Miller, Lawrence, and Mrs. Julia
Dryden, 2203 Hazelton Court, and Mrs. Hugh Rice, 716 Lindenwood, both in
Topeka; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several step great
grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 P.M. Monday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. The
Topeka Consistory, Scottish Rite, will conduct a service at the funeral home.
Hoyt Lodge No. 327 AF&AM, will conduct graveside services at Mayetta Cemetery.
Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home
in Holton. Memorial contributions may be made to Pottawatomie United Methodist
Church at Mayetta and sent in care of Kansas State Bank at Holton.
Effie died of T.B. in Mayetta, Kansas. Her three children were raised by their father with the help of Aunt Sadie and Uncle Fred Baker who lived very close to them. Archie also had her birth year as 1893 instead of 1894.
