John Hurt Jr. was born about 1740 in Stocks Creek, Amelia Co. Virginia. He married Mary “Polly” King in 1760, Halifax, Va. and lived there until 1778 when he sold out and moved to Surry Co. NC. He is recorded as receiving NC land grants in Surry in 1778 and 1782 on the south side of the Yadkin river. He later bought land on the north side of the river and that is where Robert and other of his children settled. Our hurt line derives from Robert King, son of John Jr. Robert King , b 1775 in Halifax, Va., married Elizabeth Phillips, 11th of Sept 1803 in marriage bond, Surry Co. Elizabeth was born 1778 and died in 1850 in Surry Co. John Jr’s children are as follows; Sara, b 1761-1789? William Hurt, b.1783 in Surry and married Francis ”Frankey” Cockerham in 1807. This line remained on the south side of the Yadkin River and their descendents remain.. Martha Hurt, b 1782. Elizabeth “Betsy” Hurt, b. 1786. married Cornelius Woodruff in 1809. John Hurt, b1772 married Catherine Elizabeth? Charles, b1774. Joel Hurt, b 1765 . mentioned in John Hurt Jr’s Estate Inventory. Mary Hurt, administer, only, Joel, James, John, and Suze (Sara) are listed. Six hundred and twenty acres, personal items and livestock are inventoried. This Joel married Anny Hawkins Kerby, 1793 in Surry and moved to Henderson Co. Tenn.. and died there in 1839. Thomas, b 1761-1789? James, born between 1758-1780 and married Elizabeth Morris, 6th of Dec. 1786 in Halifax, Va.

To the right rear of sub-station is a service RR track and the graves are to the left of tracks, up the bare embankment and into the woods approx.150 yards. Concrete block pump house (small) visible on the trail into woods.
