In 1944 Clara V. Kelly (R22). wrote to Sylvester F. Hiatt, of Richmond, California, thinking he was probably a descendent of her uncle Sylvester T. Hiatt. She received the following reply:
“Tacoma Wash. Jan. 10th 1944
Dear Lady -
My son, Sylvester F. Hiatt of 2706 Clinton Ave. Richarmond Calif. Received a letter from you; and as he knows very Little about his fathers people; He sent your letter here to me his mother. He thought I might be able to answer your questions.“Tho I do not know if I can be of any help, as I never knew a Archie Hiatt and none of my Husbands People Lived in Kansas as far as I know of them.
“They lived around Council Bluffs and Boone Iowa, and they were both Father and Mother Hiatt born and raised in South Carolina. Near Hiattsville I think and when they were first married they moved to Iowa. Father Hiatts given name was Skuble.
“Mother Hiatts maiden name was Sylvester and she named our son for Her People, that is where he got the name Sylvester.
“It seems to me that our Family of Hiatts came from Ireland but I don’t know what part.
“Father and Mother Hiatt are both Dead long years ago, also my sister In Law Josephine Hiatt and my Husband Frank are all gone; There is two sons living Jerome Hiatt of Forrester N. Dakota, and Sylvester Hiatt of Irwin Iowa. And that is all I know of them.
“Son and I have always lived far away by our selves so I have not kept in close touch with them. Tho we have been good friends, tho mostly on paper.
“Now if you can get any information from this, I will be glad.
“Do wish you had told me a little about yourself tho.

In 1950 Russell E. Bidlack (of Willow Run, Mich.; a personal friend ___ ed.)
while a vacationing in Iowa, “I discovered when I got home that there is a Hiatt family living in a town near here (Irwin). so other day drove down to see if I could dig up any information for you. I talked to a Mrs. Sylvester Hiatt. She did not know much about her husband’s family but I’ll give you what she could remember. Her husband was Sylvester Hiatt, who was born in 1875 ___ at least she knew he was 74 when he died on October 3, 1949. He was born in Booneville, Iowa, the son of Shubae came originally from Indiana.“ This Sylvester Hiatt was one of four children __ they were, on order of birth, John, Josephine, Jerome (boy). and Sylvester. This Mrs. Hiatt I talked to said that her husband had lost all track of his relatives long before his death, but that she thought Jerome lived somewhere in S.D.” (R145).
