Levi and Huldah were staunch Quakers. Levi came to Iowa in the fall of
1849, ran an engine in a sawmill at Oskaloosa for a year and returned to
Indiana by walking to Keokuk and taking a boat to St. Louis. he travelled from St. Louis to Madison, Ind. on the "Belle of St. Louis".
In 1856 Levi and Huldah brought their small daughter Laura to Earlham, Iowa. Brother Edwin Mahlon and Sam Wilson helped build their cabin in a fortnight with timber from along the Coon River. The barn was built the following week. The family celbrated the 4th of July the next week at Winterset, Iowa.
