Sarah C. BALES

Children William, Elmer, Susie.

Note: William Mapes married Lillie Jeffers, a daughter of Abe and Delsina
Bates Jeffers, the latter was divorced about 1875.  In 1878, Delsina Bates
Jeffers became the wife of Thomas Higgenbotham Bales, who was a brother of
the above Sarah.

Address of Elmer, living in Norton, Kansas apparently had his mother with
him about 1960.

These excerpts taken from letters written by Marie Bales Patton, McCook, Neb.
to Miss Maymee L. Bales, Linneus, Mo.

March 19, 1962.  Dear Mayme, I want to find out who raised Aunt Sarah Bales
Mapes, the youngest child of Amer and Harriett.  Sarah wasn't named in the
Pension applied for by Matilda, Amer's 2nd wife, only Cassius M. Clay Beals,
son of Amer and Matilda.  In my records on Amer J. Beals' Civil War Records,
they show where Sarah put in for back Pension that  she should have had until
shee was 16 or 18 years of age.  She was age 21 (1874) when she filed for
Pension and was already married to Hiram Mapes, filing in Seward Co., Neb.
probably.

April 21, 1962 Dear Mayme, I have not found out who raised Sarah C. Bales after
the death of her mother in 1856, but Sarah was with a woman by the name of Till
Gray for awhile when she was small, and this woman used to whip little Sarah
real hard if she did something wrong.  Elmer Mapes, Norton, Kansas, a son of
Sarah's was here last Sunday and he told me that.  Elmer has a picture of his
grandmotheer, Harriett (Higgenbotham) Beals.

May 24, 1962 Dear Mayme, I was down to a cousin's home yesterday and looked at
old pictures he had that had been his mothers, Viretta Mitchem, McCook, Neb.
He has a picture of Hiram and Sarah C. Bales Mapes.  Lots of old pictures but
non with names to identify them.  I remember Uncle Hiram, but I can't remember
Aunt Sarah.  She died verey suddenly one night after dinner, and I must have
been too young to remember her.  I do remember how happy all of us kids were
every time Uncle Hi camee over from Norton, Kansas, to visit Thomas H. and
Delsina Bales, my grandparents. The poor man couldn't get away from us at all.
I think I would have run a mile or more just to hold on to his hand walking
back.  He was so good and kind and always seemed to know just what little ones
would be interested in.  I have never since since seen anyone just like him.  I
remember him so well as being tall and straight.  He was a wonderful person,
and I'm not too good at describing him, can't find just the right words.
Flowery words just wouldn't fit.
Love and Prayers. Marie Patton

Dear Mayme Bales,
We received your letter today and although I can not tell you much to night

Amer Jackson Bales was my husbands Grandfather my husbands name is
Clareence Cecil Bales.  He is a son to Tom Bales.  There are also 2 moree boys
and 5 girls in their family.
We have often wanted to go to Cambridge and see the place where Grandpa

You see Tom Bales father (Amer Jackson) died in the War but as his first
wife (Harriett) had died he (Amer Jackson) married again and had one son by the
2nd wife which was Uncle Clay Bales, and then after Grandfather (Amer Jackson)
dieed his brother Daniel which seems to be your Great Grandfather married his
widow (Matilda) and all of Tom Bales children called him blind grandpa as he
was blind and they loved him.
We will try and get all we know and send it to you before very long.
We would like very much to you to come visit us.
    Please write again.

My grandfather and four boys were all in the Union Army, my father was in
the 57th Indiana Regiment and  I think Co. C.
