In 1950 Mrs. Luther Jewett Hiiatt wrote: Statira Elizabeth Jewett -- know nothing. She always said her mother died when she was born. Her father brought her to Syracuse, New York and her mother Mabbit brought her up and sent her to Wheaton College. There she met Luther Lee Hiatt; married after the war. She had a large oil painting of her father which she always cherished; the only thing of the past; my son has it now. And he, her father was a very distinguished gentlemen; the work is beautifully done, and must have cost a lot in those early days. He had an artist retouch it and it is one his proud possessions. (R86).
On Saturday afternoon, October 5, 1895, while on an outing at Powers Lake Wisconsin, with two friends William H. Grote and John Dollinger Mr. Hiatt and Mr Grote decided to go still-fishng. In some manner their boat was tipped over and they were both drowned. The account as given in the Wheaton (Illinois). paper is too lengthy to appear here, but following is Mr. Hiatt’s obituary from the Wheaton paper:
LUTHER L. HIATT - was born in Henry Co., Indiana, August 2d, 1844, and was the oldest son of Dr. A. H. and Mary Ann Hiatt. When he was fourteen years of age, his parents moved to Wheaton, on account of its educational advantages, the Doctor opening a drug store and Luther, the following year entered Wheaton College. Here he remained until the fall of 1862, when he enlisted in Co. F, 105th III. Vol. Inft., and from his knowledge of the drug business learned in his father’s store was shortly after detailed as prescription clerk of the brigade. Following one of the sever engagements he had charge of the field hospital, with over one thousand wounded soldiers. He was mustered out with the regiment at Washington, in June, 1865, and lacked at that time two months of being of age.
At the close of the war he returned to Wheaton and entered his father’s drug store, and in a short time succeeded to the business. In October, of that year, he was married to Miss Statira E. Jewett, of Saratoga, N. Y., the thirtieth anniversary of their marriage being celebrated only last Friday.
Mr. Hiatt was an ardent republican and an active politician, both in local and state politics. For over twenty years he held either the office of Justice of the Peace or Police Magistrate. He was elected to represent this, the Fourteenth District, in the 33rd General Assembly and was re-elected to the 34th. It was during his term at Springfield that the great Logan fight took place, and he was one of the invincible 1003 who voted for Logan Day after day, succeeding in tiring out the democrats and finally elelcted man to the U.S. Senate. He was apointed by Gov. Fifer, one of the three Trustees of the Elgin Insane Hospital, and held the office until removed by Gov. Altgeld, on account of his political faith."In G. A. R. circles he was active and popular, and it was largely through his efforts that E. S. Kelley Post was moved to Wheaton, and at the time of his death held the office of Commander. He was also a member of Wheaton Lodge No., 269, F. and A. M., of Doric Chapter, No. 166, R. A. M., and of the National Union.
Personally, he was well liked, being particularly popular with the young people, and his store was, we think more generally frequented by them than any of the others. He was also very popular in Society, and no one ever (sic). had a chance of feeling dull when Mr. Hiatt, with his wit and ready repartee, was around.
Mr. Hiatt leaves to mourn his loss, his father and mother, three brothers three sisters, his wife and three sons, Linneas L., late of the C. and N. W. R. general officers in Chicago; Charles M., who has been in the store with his father, who is a registered pharmacist, and will, we understand, carry on the business; and Luther J. who is attending Wheaton College.”(R86).
