James Henry LOVE

JAMES HENRY LOVE, son of HENRY LOVE and MARY AMICK. He was born July 06, 1846 in Richmond Virginia, and died November 22, 1923 in Worthington Cemetery Baltimore County, Maryland.

Notes for JAMES HENRY LOVE: I found the following in a posting from Ed NOONAN from earlier in the year. "The descendants of the Love family trace their origins back to the clans of Scotland. One of the septs or parts of the McKinnon Clan was a LOVE sept. The name Love is an ancient Kentish surname of Saxon origin. In its earliest form it was "Lufu", meaning "dear one." It may have been used either as a baptismal name or a nickname and to have later been adopted as the surname by the one so called. It is one of the few English surnames which has not gone through many variations in spelling during the seven or eight centuries in which it has been in use. It is found, however, in the records as Luf, Lufe, Luff, Luffe, and Lueff. In the Anglo-Saxon alphabet the letter "F" was the consonant for the letter "V", so, out of the south of England the Loves spread to Scotland, thence to Ireland, the United States, Australia and the ends of the earth." ************************************************************************* Do you belong to the Worthington list. I do not but my cousin does. He is a Love and is looking for a Worthington. If you have posted on that list he has seen it. His Worthington was Robert Worthington born somewhere in 1801 and died in 1876 in Crass Co. Arkansas? His son James Henry Worthington born 1852 in Laundes Ms died in Wheeler co Tx. married to Cockerham and their daughter Minnie Lee Worthington born 1884 in Fulton Co. Ar married Len Walker Love in Ardmore Ok and died in California.. Mary Russell bird@scrtc.blue.net************************************************************************** Other Loves Journal of Allegany Vol 32 1996 by Jeanne M Cordts "The house where Douglas Love lived at c/o Seldon Sen Rd & Rt 36 in Lonaconing Md is gone. His broken tombstones lies half buried in a remote wooded cemetery high in the hills to the west of the town. The words on the stone attest to his having been born in Scotland in1826 and assassinated on 12/6/1868. He was 42 Yrs old. Douglas & Margaret...had much tragedy in their lives. Of their 10 children, 3 sons & a daughter had died at infancy & another son was killed at age of 7. But in 1868 Love held a responsible job as superintendent of the Central Coal & Iron Company"s mines. According to the Cumberland Alleganian, at dinner time on a Sunday evening several men knocked at the Love home. When 1 opf the children opened the door & invited them in, they said they were in a hurry & wished to see his father. As soon as Douglas Love stepped out on the stoop they fired several shots at him, killing him almost instantly, Margaret, hearing the shots, came to find her husband dying at the door step. One a count of Douglas Loves death reported that he had been considered both by miners & the officers of the Co, to be the best superintendent who ever had charge of a mine in this region. Another report alleged that he had discharged several men for misconduct of some sort & that he had refused to re employ them. Since local authorities took no initiative to identify the killers investigators...were sent out from Baltimore....5 men were arrested & indicted : Lawrence Cottle, Patrick Maguire, Patrick or Michael Donahue, Patrick Lanigan & Alexander Flafferty....the men were kept in jail for over a yr...But..they were let go, for lack of evidence & absence of witnesses... Love's death heightened anxieties & tensions in the Western Md coal communities. People knew the event mimicked killings by the Molly Maguirires in NE Pa coal fields. Rumors flew about...The case remains unsolved..." The article has photo of tombstone, discusses who were the Molly Maguires?photo of Douglas Jr , give List of Fugitive Mollie Maguires 1879 as per Pinkerton Detective Agency which included "William Love -Murder of Ths Gwyther at Girardville Pa 8/14/1875 Is a miner & boatman; 26 yrs old 5 ft 9 in high; med build; wts abt 150 lbs; lt complexion; lt mustache; has scar from burn on lt side of neck under chin, & coal marks on hands; thin & sharp features; generally dresses well. Lived at Girardville Schuylkill Co Pa." It also indicates that Margaret Love remarried to Henry Stafford in1870 and that James Love & Jean Love Burner great granddaughter of Douglas helped with the article. ************************************************************************* >From Navarro Leaves and Branches Vol 9 # 3 Aug 1986 compiled by Sylvia Leigh Pasley Lofton Northern Ireland > Pa > Tn > Tx 1 James Love b 1721 Ballybays, Cavan Co Ireland to America 1741 will 10/30/1771 m Faithul Richardson b 1718 Ballyhagen, Armagh Co Ireland came to America 1736 (members of New Garden meetings in York Co Pa) owned 600a farm Newberry Township York Co 2 William 2 John 2 Jane 2 James 2 Faithful 2 Ann 2 Samuel b 11/2/1763 d 11/18/1847 hatter aft parents died sold land went to Tn prominent citizen of Blount Co, County Treasurer, own hotel & hat business 1 property housed Sam Houston Inn (sold by children) 55 yrs when m 6/30/1818 Mary Magdolin Beelor d 10/7/1848 3 James Richardson Love b 2/2/1823 d 6/30/1900 went into business with 3 other men (Rockford Manufacturing C of Rockford Tn) m 10/4/1853 Harriet Eliza Badgett d 7/4/1899 had 11 issue 8 b in Tn 3 b in Texas After Civil War wagon trained to Tx with unmarried sister became farmer 4 Samuel Porter 4 James Oliver 4 Charles Ernest 4 Suan Magdolin 4 Ida Richardson 4 George Harris 4 William Freeman 4 Flora Lee 4 Mary Elizabeth Love( b 6/29/1872 Corsicana Tx m 2/9/1898 Harvey Carruth Pasley 5 Woodson Carruth Parsley (authors father) 5 Cullen 5 William Beelor 4 Lena Ellen 4 Mattie Beelor 3 Mary Jane Love b 3/13/1825 taught school in Tn & Tx d 1874 bur Hamilton-Beeman Cem in Love plot with James & wife near Corsicana Tx More About JAMES HENRY LOVE: Death certificate: D-81065 City of Baltimore
