Notes for BASIL SPALDING WORTHINGTON: VMI.  Virginia Military Institute  Class of 1864-Military Science (1864MS) Roster   The designation "Class of 1864MS," given to this group by VMI Historian William Couper in the 1930's, is confusing. These cadets actually attended VMI only in the spring and early summer of 1861, for the sole purpose of receiving military training in preparation for entrance into the army; they did not pursue the regular academic course. They matriculated after April 21, 1861, when the bulk of the corps was sent to Richmond to serve as drillmasters for army recruits, and left before July 2, 1861. The class consisted of 85 members and they were drilled by a small number of cadets left behind on guard duty at VMI. A few members of 1864MS subsequently returned to VMI and enrolled in the regular academic program; these men do not appear here, but are listed on the roster of their permanent class.
