WILLIAM5 WORTHINGTON (VORNEL (WORNOLL)4, WILLIAM3, CAPTAIN JOHN2, REV JOHN1) was born November 30, 1747 in St Margaret's, Westminister Parish Anne Arundel Co, Md, and died Abt. 1820 in "The Valley" Prince George Co Md. He married JANE CONTEE February 28, 1782 in Upper Marlborough, Prince George's Co Md, daughter of COL CONTEE and SARAH FENDALL. She was born Abt. 1761 in Brookville Manor" Prince George's Co Md, and died November 19, 1825. Notes for WILLIAM WORTHINGTON: Was reared in the home of his paternal grandfather who left him a handsome estate bordering upon the Chesapeake Bay & the Maggothy River, & opposite the islands called "the three Sisters" His dwelling stood on a hill overlooking the bay called "Mount Ida" In 1773 his land was named" Worthington Courtsey". He was polished, affable and generous: but his property, some 1200 acres was sacrificed to pay his friends' debts. He then removed with his family to Nottingham. For many years was a vestryman of St Paul's Church. His wife inherited "Brookfield" and its graveyard. The farm contained about 300a & was renamed by William "The Vale of Tempre" on account of the peaceful life as a planter he passed there. It is now known as "the Valley" and is held by his granddaughter Mrs Thomas F Bowie Jr. It was willed to Walter Worthington, the eldest son. In the family graveyard are interred the early Brooke owners of the esatae, their descendents, the Contees, followed by the Worthingtons for many generations. Near this graveyard is a depression showing where the cellar of the original dwelling was It had been burned while William occupied it. Notes for GEN THOMAS CONTEE WORTHINGTON: "Gen Worthington had just been elected to Congress in 11/1824 when the Marquis de Lafayette accepted an invitation to visit Frederick at the end of 12/1824. As the member of Congress-elect for Frederick, Gen Worthington served on the Committee which made all the arrangements for Lafayette's Farewell Visit to Frederick. Gen Worthington propsred numerous toasts to the Marquis during a sumptuous banquet tendered him at the Golden Fleece Hotel which was attended by all the luminaries of Md. Hundreds of veterans of the Revolutionary War attended the gala visit and there were more parades, fireworks and balls than event annually at a magnificent costume ball, one of th social highlights of life in Fredericktowne.  *************************************************************************************
