I recently found that my line of Gordons may have possibly come to TN from KY and before that from Amelia and Amherst Counties in VA. This is hinted at in a book entitled "The History and Genealogy of some pioneer Northern Alabama Families." The book traces the migration of some early AL/TN/KY Gordons and their close family friends, the BLACK family.

Here is some background:

My current research efforts focus on my gr-gr-gr-grandfather Robert Gordon (abt. 1773-1854) who moved to Warren Co., TN abt. 1810. He had a wife Sarah and at least 8 children, including my gr-gr-grandfather James Madison Gordon. It is written in several family bibles that Robert Gordon's father was named William Gordon (17?? - ????).

According to Plat and Grant records of early 1800s Warren Co., TN there were several Gordons living very close (or even with) my Robert including: John Gordon, Pauline Gordon, James Gordon, John Gordon Jr., Elizabeth Gordon, Elise Gordon and a widow Gordon.

Is it possible that my Robert Gordon and his father William Gordon may be one of those KY lines?

Thanks, Tei A. Gordon

The Orr family has been in Licking County since 1804 when it was stil l a part of Fairfield County. They settled in Bowling Green Township w here some descendants still reside. The families of that day were larg e and their children married into neighboring families, themselves pro ducing large families until there must be hundreds and hundreds, perha ps thousands of Orr descendants scattered far and wide across the U.S. A. and around the world.

James Orr, born in Northern Ireland, arrived in America 1758. Within t wo or three years he married Mary Dale, daughter of a fairly prominen t slave-holder of Hartford and Baltimore Counties, Maryland. James an d Mary had nine children born in Maryland
and Fayette County, Pa. where they moved in 1780-81. Mary died in 1827 ? and James in 1815. Their children were: John Dale; James; Jane, marr ied Isaac Courson; Rachel married John McClelland, remained in Pa.; Ma ry married a Davis; Elizabeth, unmarried; Nancy; Robert and George. O f this family John Dale Orr moved to Preston County, West Va.; James, Jane, Elizabeth, Robert and George moved to Licking County. George an d Elizabeth soon moved again to Union County and died there. James
was the last to come since he stayed in Pa. to care for the aged paren ts, coming to Ohio in 1817 after their decease.

A selected Orr line descended from early arrivals in Bowling Green Tow nship,
Licking County, Ohio. Joseph L. Orr was the eldest son of Robert and
Elizabeth Jenkins Orr. Robert was the third eldest son of James and Ma ry
Dale Orr of Orrsburg, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. James was probabl y born
in Ulster, Northern Ireland about 1732. He married Mary Dale of Harfor d
County, Maryland. In 1825 he died in Orrsburg and his wife followed in
1826. Robert was living in Bowling Green Township by 1804 and was the
first of the Orrs to arrive from Pennsylvania. He and his wife had sev en
children before he hung himself in 1834.

With the help of many members of Rootsweb we have recently added anoth er
connection from this Orr family to Bowsers of nearby Hopewell Township ,
Perry County. And this is my thank you. If the details bore you skip t o the
end of this outline.

A few years ago we published a book in memory of my wife, Betty Jean C lark
Laube's, maternal grandfather, Bert R. Orr of Bowling Green. With the help
of her Orr relatives who were still alive, now all deceased, and espec ially
with the help of other researchers like Helen McGaughy, we identified those
Orrs who had arrived in Bowling Green Township before 1820, and many o f
their descendants, but by no means all of them. The Orrs that we foun d who
had been born in Bowling Green before the middle of the 19th Century w ere
descendants of two Orr brothers, Robert and James.

The brothers were in Bowling Green Township by 1804 and 1816. We saw O rrs
in nearby Perry County and two them were married into the Bowser famil y,
but we could connect only one of them to the Orrs of Bowling Green. Th at
one connection was the marriage of Perry B. Orr to Eva Myrtle Bowser i n
1894. One of the brothers, James Orr, was his great-grandfather. But w e
could not find an Orr connection for Birdie M. Orr who had married Mur ray
Bowser about 1897.

Even when we wrote the Bowser book in honor of my wife's maternal
grandmother, Anna Maude Bowser, of Hopewell Township, Perry County, Oh io, we
still could not connect Birdie M. Orr Bowser to either of the two Orr
brothers.

Then we found a long lost cousin, Audrey V. Bowser ( I am going to omi t her
married name.) She knew her great-grandfather's name was Samuel Orr an d
that her grandmother's name, his daughter, was Birdie M. Orr. And we k new
from Perry County cemetery records that Birdie was born in 1876. I ask ed
for someone to look up in the 1880 Ohio census a Samuel Orr born abou t 1840
with a daughter Birdie M. born in 1876. There were several very prompt
replies. Here is the most complete one:

1880 Ohio Census.
Many sent this information and I have thanked them privately. I hope t his
holds format - it came to me as an attachment in perfect tabular form.

NOTE - Linnville, Bowling Green Township was where Samuel M. Orr's pro bable
parents farmed. Which was very helpful. Also, the first farms of the t wo
Orr brothers was within a stone's throw of the hamlet of Linnville.

Armed with Samuel's middle initial and the actual year of his birth an d his
wife's name I was able to easily find him in a Lutheran cemetery in Ho pewell
Township, Perry County, Ohio. It is known that several near by Brethre n
churches buried there dead in this Lutheran cemetery. This cemetery re cord
actually listed the wife's maiden name - Sarah J. Snyder.

Samuel was said to have been a Brethren minister and that is no doubt
accurate. His wife is probably descended from two Brethren ministers,
Daniel and Jacob Snyder. They held meetings in their homes in Thorn an d
Hopewell Township in the first half of the 19th Century.

Another helpful family historian surprised us by sending the 1860 cens us
enumeration for this same Samuel, but with a different, younger, famil y.
We assume the first wife died and Samuel remarried and began the famil y we
see in his 1880 census.

Perhaps a note for newcomers-
You will notice that when I asked for help I posted a very specific,
limited, question.
In addition to the 1880 census - researchers made use of the 1860
enumeration, the LDS Ancestral Files, available on the net and throug h the
many Family History Libraries(LDS). But use the Ancestral Files only t o
suggest where to look for your ancestors.
Notice that the 1860 census would not have identified Samuel as the fa ther
of Mattie B. or Birdie M. Orr.

I also used a publication available from the Perry County OGS chapter,
Hopewell and Madison Township Cemeteries. Volume 2, 1989. Such publica tions
by the various OGS chapters and other researchers are much appreciated .
Thanks to those who take the time to do them.
And most crucial of all - information from living ancestors. Unless ou r
cousin told us about her great-grandfather Samuel Orr none of this wou ld
have happened.

Hope I haven't bored you. Best regards to all of those on the lists - and
especially many thanks to those of you who take the time to throw a li ttle
bread upon the River of Life. Hal
James ORR was reported to have been born in Ulster, Ireland in about 1735. His ancestors came from the lowlands of Scotland near the Urr River in the early 1600s (they were expelled by the English). His family was of the Protestant faith. James immigrated to America btw 1750-60 and is first noted in Maryland where he marries Mary DALE in 1761.

James and Mary Dale ORR move to Fayette Co., Pa in the mid 1780s. James and Mary have at least 7 children, 5 of whom moved West to Licking Co., or nearby, beginning in 1804. The "relationship manager's" 3rd. Great Grandfather, Robert Orr, was one of those children. The others were James [Jr.], Elizabeth, Jane, and George, all born btw 1770-1795. The fourth son, John, moved to what is now West Virginia.

James ORR died on his farm "Orrsburg" in 1815 and is buried there in a now unmarked grave. So is his wife Mary DALE.

James paid 2 pounds, 17 shillings, and 9 pence for this land.

James left a detailed will naming his children, etc. More information can be obtained from Bert Waits, the poster.

John DALE ORR was most likely James ORR's oldest son.
