Benjamin DEES was found in Richmond Co, NC in 1790.  He also appeared in Anson Co, NC records.  He moved to Chesterfield Co, SC in the middle of the 1790's, where Richard DEES the son of John DEES was living at the time.

He was a Revolutionary War Soldier. Source: DAR Patriot Index. Centennial Edition, Pt. 1, P. 80, Washington D.C., 1990

John DEES

John DEES
BORN: between 1705 & 1715 most likely in Isle of Wight Co, VA
DIED: SC /? his sons were in SC in 1761.... He was with them most
likely
       MARRIED: Mary ??

In Edgecombe Co, NC records of DEEDS #2 1734, John DEES appears as a
witness to his brother Emanuel's deed to Elizabeth PRICE.  Earlier I stated
that in 1740 Emanuel DEES deeded to John DEES 90 ac of the tract deeded to
Emanuel in 1730, this was in the Edgecombe Co DEED Book #1 pg 386. After
this it is another 10 years before you find another record on the family in
Edgecombe County.  On Nov 24, 1744 John DEES was granted 100 acres in the
County on the north side of the Tarr River, beginning at Maple Swamp and
passing by Moore Swamp.  This record was found in the NC Land Grant Office,
Book 5 pg 171.

Our next records are found in Johnston Co, NC, where John DEES petitioned
for 100 acres of land. The county Census show that by 1750 John's brothers
Emanuel and William were living there also.

July 15, 1755 John DEES and his wife Mary of Johnston Co, NC deeded to
Benjamin NICHOLSON 25 acres on the south side of the Neuse River at the
mouth of Beels Creek.  The witnesses were: John LEE & Robert NICHOLSON,
Deed Book H, 1 pg 67.

The last record of Johnston Co, shows John DEES on Nov 25, 1765 of Johnston
Co, NC deeded to Needham BRYAN land on the north side of the Neuse River
beginning at the Rock Spring cut, containing 120 acres, part of a patent to
Mark PHILLIPS dated Jun 30, 1738; Test,  F W BRYAN & Simon DEES.  This was
in the Johnston Co, NC Deed Book 1 pg 245.  This was the land John DEES
owned next to his brother Emanuel, mentioned in Emanuel's Deed to Nicholas
BURKE in 1760.  John DEES does not show up in the Johnston Co records after
this deed was recorded.

All the men spoken of until now, show up in Sumter Co, SC.  This is what
leads me to believe that they were all brothers and the sonsof Emanuel
DEES, who's father was also named Emanuel DEES from James City and Isle of
Wight Co, VA.

Emanuel DEES Sr.

The Dees Family originated in Scotland; They were dwellers on the river Dee.   The family took their name from this river.     The River Dee is located in Scotland. It is in the northern part and flows into Aberdeen.  The Dees Clan was traced from Scotland to Wales and then to America.  The name was spelled DEAS in Scotland.  It was changed after coming to America.  Not all of the DEAS' changed the spelling. You will find it spelled various ways today.    The Coat-of-Arms of the DEAS family of Scotland was: "Ermine A Pale Vert."  The crest was: A Bee Feeding on a Daisy, All Por." The Bee is considered, as it is, the symbol of industry.

1. Emanuel DEES of James City, VA and the Isle of Wight Co, VA Born: abt 1676  Died: 1722 Isle of Wight Co, VA Married: Unknown The first mention of the family was in Nansemond Co, VA.  John DEE was transported to the colony, among others, by Richard BENNETT who was granted 2,000 acres in Nansemond Co, on June 26, 1635 for bringing in settlers. This information was found in Nugent's 'Cavaliers and Pioneers,' pg 23.  I am thinking that this John Dee was possibly the father of Emanuel DEES of whom we have the following records in Virginia.  There does not seem to be any information on another DEE's in the area at this time.

Thomas NESHAM of James City Co, VA, was granted 168 acres in that county for the transportation of four persons, among them Emanuel DEES, 29 Oct 1669.

In the William & Mary College Quarterly, 1st Series, Vol 14, pg 36; a WILL of William BROADRIBB in 1703, directs in his WILL, to dispose the land and plantation whereon Emanuel DEES lives, in James City Co, VA.

In the Surry Co, VA Order Book 1713-1718;  A suit of Henry LIGHTFOOT VS Emanuel DEES; the suit was dismissed.  This shows that Emanuel had moved to James River after 1703 or 1704.

The Children of Emanual DEES appear to be the following:
1. Emanuel DEES
2. John DEES
3. William DEES
4. Daniel DEES

Records that lead to this conclusion:
Bertie Co, NC records from 1730
Records of Isle of Wight Co, VA 24 Sep 1739, John POWELL deeded Land in Isle of Wight Co, VA to Daniel DAIZ. This was found in DEED Book 6 pg 196. Daniel DEES does not show up again in the records of Isles of Wight Co in VA.  It seems he moved to NC from VA.  Even though the spelling is different it is most likely the same DEES family we are dealing with.
