Iva Jane's mother died when she was 12. She and her sister Minnie stayed with and aunt and uncle during good weather. They spent the winter in Biggsville with their brother, Miles, and their father, Thomas Huey Moore. The uncle was their mother's half brother. Grandmother Daugherty took Sadie (who was only two) and raised her till she graduated high school. Iva Jane was rowdy and a tomboy. She was a lefthanded pitcher on a girl's baseball team.
