BIOGRAPHY: Martin Dunagan is believed to have been born in Orange or Surry County, North Carolina, about 1800.
QUESTION: His father is believed to have been John Dunagan, Jr., a soldier in the Revolutionary War, who moved to Tennessee sometime between 1804-1810, settling in Maury and Williamson Counties. He had three sons, Ezekiel, Martin and William. There was a fourth child, but the name and sex of this child is not known.
Martin, a wagon maker, married Margaret Donaldson prior to 1821 in Tennessee, possibly in Dickson or Giles County. Margaret, one of eight children and maybe the youngest, was born in Tennessee about 1802. The date of her father's death is unknown, but he died before her mother, who died October 13, 1821, in Giles County, Tennessee.
They had at least eight children; two sons whose names aren't known, Elizabeth, William L., Permelia, Albert Marion, Thomas Sanford and Atlantic.
Martin and Margaret were believed to have been in Giles County, Tennessee, in 1820. By 1830, they were in Hickman County and by 1847, they were in Dickson County. They remained in Dickson County until 1850, then disappeared from all census and tax rolls. There is no known record of them after 1850.
Most Dunagans in the area lived in southern Dickson and northern Hickman Counties.
UNKNOWN Elizabeth Dunnegan married Amos King in Dickson County on January 9, 1848. This may have been a child of Martin and Margaret.
