John Alexander HIATT

Tabor Beacon  4-17-1903
CUT ON BARBED WIRE -- John Hiatt, living near the Mt. Zion church,
southeast of Tabor, nearly had his head torn off one day last week, while
riding a horse and driving a cow.  A barbed wire fence was near which had all
but the upper wire down, and the cow seeing a way to escape ran under this wire
into an adjoining lot.  Mr. Hiatt was riding fast and was unable to stop his
horse, which darted under the wire after the fleeing cow.  The barbed wire
caught him in the mouth, threw his head back and tore his face open on both
sides.  By chance he did not lose his life.  The doctor took nineteen stitches
and Mr. Hiatt is getting along nicely although his wound is very painful
