William Robert BRAY

William is on the census for Surry County 1810.  He had six in family. His service record gives the following details about, his military service.  In Pearson's Militia, Capt. Thomas Crawford's Company of Infantry 7th Regiment, detached entered, Feb.1, 1814 discharged Sept. 11, 1814, 7 mos., 4 dayswas paid $8.00 per month - in all $57.06.  The full amount due was $59.00 and28 cents, but he had 125 cents deducted for a pair of shoes.  He traveled 120miles - 6 days to make it. He was placed on a Supplemental Roll in Salisbury, N. C.. Sept. 12, 1814. According to his service record, he went as a substitute for Thomas Bray, although there is no way of proving that this was his son, it is thought that this was his oldest child, Thomas born 1791 - 92, The subscribing witnesses to Lititia's petition were Watson Holyfield and BenjaminBaker. They stated: State of North Carolina, Surry County On the 28th day ofJuly A.D.., 1864 personally appeared before me an acting justice of the Peacewithin and for the County and state aforesaid Watson  Holyfield and Benjamin Baker who severally being sworn according to law declare that they were personally acquainted with William Bray named in the foregoing declaration.  That he entered as a volunteer in the company of  Capt. Davidson in the Regiment ofNorth Carolina as a Fifer of said company where he was attacked with a disease known as the shaking Palsy incapacitating him for the duties of Fife. He then entered the line and served a sir month tour in the Creek Nation. Wilst inthe service as above by exposure his disease was greatly augmented and afterhis return home was so disabled as never to be able to do any labor toward the support of his family.  That he died at the poor house in Surry County in the state of North Carolina at the time stated in the declaration of Mrs. Bray.Also that the said Letitia Bray is the widow of the aforesaid William Bray and that she is now a widow.  Also that they were in the service aforesaid withWm. Bray and have ever since lived in the same neighborhood with him until his death.  When Letitia made application for a pension it was turned down, "because," they said, "he didn't die of the disease which he was seized of whilein the service." 's Declaration: On this the 29th day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eighteen hundred and fifty-four personally appeared before me acting Justice of the Peace with and for the County aforesaid Mrs. Letitia Bray a resident of the County of Surry and State of North Carolina age eighty-three years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on heroath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of a provision made by the law of the United States, passed of the third day of Feb. A. D.. 1853. That she is the widow of William Bray who was a private in the Company of Capt. Davidson of the 5th or 7th Regiment of North Carolina Militia, Commanded by Col. Jesse Pearson War of 1812.  That she was married to the saidWilliam Bray about  1790 for which proof she refers you to the files for obtaining her land warrant. That her husband the aforesaid William Bray died onthe 26th day of April  1854, at the poor house in the county of Surry and Stateof North Carolina in consequence of a disease of the nerves, contracted while in the service of the United States in the line of duty, which rendered himalmost helpless from the time of his return from said service until his death. That she was a widow at the passage of the act aforesaid and is still a widow, and that she had by the said William Bray the following children:  ThomasBray, Amy, Leander, Sally, Tyre, Matilda, Henry, Benjamin, and William, whoseages she cannot now remember, having lost the record of their births, all ofwhom were largely over 16 at the passage of the act. her Letitia (+) Bray mark Letitia spent her last days with her oldest daughter

7. WILLIAM ROBERT3 BRAY , SR. (DAVID2, PETER1) was born 1772 in Surry County, North Carolina, and died April 26, 1854 in North Carolina. He married LETITIA H. HAMLIN Abt. 1792 in Surry County, North Carolina. Notes for WILLIAM ROBERT BRAY , SR.: William Robert Bray, Sr. served as a Private as a substitute for his son, Thomas H. Bray in Captain Davidson Company. Fifth or Seventh Regiment, North Carolina Company during the War of 1812. May 29, 1854 - Surry County, North Carolina On this twenty-ninth of May in the year of our Lord one thousand and fifty four personally appeared an acting justice of the peace within and for the county aforesaid Mrs. Letitia Bray, a residence of Surry County and state of North Carolina, age eighty-three yearswho being first duly sworn according to the law doth on her oath make the following declarationing order to obtain the benefit of the proposition made by the law of the United States passed on the third day of Feburary AD 1853. That she a widow of William Bray who was a private in the company of Captain Davidson of the 5th Regiment of North Carolina Militia commanded by Colonel Jessie A Pearson, War 1812. That she was married to the said William Bray about 1790 for which proof she refers to the files for obtaining her land warrant. That her husband the aforesaid William Bray died on the 26th day of April 1854 at the poor house in the County of Surry and the State of North Carolina in consequence of a disease of the nerves, contracted while in the service of the United States in the line of his juty which rendered him almost helpless frin the time of his return from said service until his death. That she was a widow at the passage of the act aforesaid and is still a widow and that she had by the said William Bray the following children; Thomas, Amy, Leander, Sally, Tyre, Matilda, Henry, Benjamin, and William, Jr. whose age she can not now remember having lost their records of their births, all of whom where largely over sixteen at the passage of this act. Letitia (X) Bray Feburary 9, 1866 - Treasury Department, Third Auditors Office No. 1257: Sir, The name of William Bray appears on the Rolls of Captain Davidson's Company of North Carolina militia, but it does not appear that he rendered any service. Respectively, Your Obt. Servant, Col. Jamison, Auditor L.P. Waldo, Esq., Com of Pensions December 5, 1854 No, 1257 Letitia Bray, widow of William Bray Captain Davidson Company Norh Carolina Militia died 1854, did not die of desease contracted of service - REJECTED May 12, 1856 - Surry County, North Carolina On this day of May AD one thousand and eight hundred and fifty-six personally appeared before me a justice of the peace within the County of Surry in the State of Norht Carolina, who being duly sworn according to law declares she is the widow of William Bray deceased who was private in the company commanded by Captain William L. Davidson in the 5th or 7th Regiment of North Carolina Militia, commanded by Col. Jesse A. Pearson in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812. That her husband volunteered in the County of Surry on or about October 1813 for a term of six months and was honorably discharged at Salisbury. She further states that she was married to said William Bray in the year 1792 by one Jesse Lester in the County and aforesaid and that her name before her marriage was Letitia Hamlin. That her husband died in the County of Surry on or about 26th day of April 1850 and that she is now a widow. And she further states that she has heretofore made application for bounty land under the act approved September 28, 1850 and obtained a warrant for 150 acres, not remembered which she has legally disposed of and not now be returned. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to whcih she may be entitled under the act of Congress approved 3rd of March 1855. Letitia Bray Attes: W.D. Rutledge Feburary 16, 1859 - Surry County, North Carolina - Resolution in favor of Letty M. Bray Resolved. That the pulbic treasury pay Letty M. Bray forty dollars, on the presentation to him of her pension certificate, properly setting forth her distresses, signed by the chairman of the County of Surry, and signed by the Speaker of both branches of the General Assembly, in accordance with the provisions of law made and provided for the relief of such widows of deceased soldiers in this State. Notes for WILLIAM ROBERT BRAY , JR.: According to his notebook, William Robert Bray, said that his grandfather, David Bray was of Native American descent, but that his great grandfather was a small redheaded Englishman. He claims that David Bray had four brothers: Peter, Berry, Stogner, and John, and he thought the rest went to Georgia, Indiana, Illinoise, and Missouri

9. REUBEN3 BRAY (DAVID2, PETER1) was born 1777 in Surry County, North Carolina, and died May 26, 1850 in Lynnville, Giles County, Tennessee. He married (1) REBECCA LAFFOON 1807. He married (2) MELINDA BUTLER INGRAM 1809 in Warren County, Texas, daughter of IGANTIUS BUTLER and DELIA UNKNOWN. Notes for REUBEN BRAY: REUBEN BRAY: Edna Reece believes that Reuben was born about 1800. She says that Reuben and Rebecca Laffoon are listed on the 1830 Surry Co, NC Census. In the 1840 Census one amle is added, but age 15-20 years. Reuben is then missing in the 1850 Census, but shows again in the 1860. In the 1860 Census Reuben is living alone, age 60 years near a family named Butcher. Rebecca was the living with her family, the Laffoons, age 53. So, Reuben and Rebecca appear to have been separated or divorced by 1860. Edna B. Reece, THE BRAYS OF FISHER RIVER, page 14 Reubin Bray migrated to Giles County, TN. Notes for JAMES L. BRAY: Jaames Bray appears to have been the signer of most of his father's legal transactions. Probably moved to Missouri before 1850. By 1847 James L. and Susanna sold to Daniel Jones all the lands which Jonathan Davis, father of Susanna, had title to. there were 1345 acres of land and part was on the Fisher River.  Edna B. 11. JOHN HANON3 BRAY (DAVID2, PETER1) was born 1780 in Surry County, North Carolina, and died Bef. 1845. He married NANCY UNKNOWN. Notes for JOHN HANON BRAY: Most of Hanon Bray's land was on Cody's Creek, but in 1808 he bought 279 acres of land on from Littleberry Bray on Bull Run. He received a land grant from the state in 1794 for the original land on Cody's Creek. the grant contained 200 acres of land and cost 30 shillings per 100 acres. Hanon made a will in 1843 with the following provisions: "Wife Nancy 60 acres of land which she may choose adjoining the dwelling house with all my household and kitchen furniture, excepting a piano, bed, and furniture to go to my grandson, Lewis Bray. these items were his mother's." In another place he deducted $10 from his son, Milton's, part. Son Joel was to th have the l;and on the south near the Cooper Path, southeast of rockford Road, northeast by the creek to the apple orchard, then south to Hanon's line [Will Book, 4, page 206].
