Volunteered 5 Jun 1861 at Dobson. He died 6 months later at 43 years of age. The family story is that his beloved wife died of typhoid fever 25 Jul 1860 and so did his eldest daughter, Sallie, 19. In despair, John joined the service with his son, Pleasant B "Bunty" Cockerham. He was a cook for Co. H an din early Dec. he accidentally tippled boiling water and was severely scalded. The company had orders to move, and dBunty put his father in a Confederate hospital where he died.Bunty returned later but could not find his father's grave.

Volunteered 5 Jun 1861 along with his father. He suffered a wound in the left hand and right shoulder at Winchester, VA, 25 May 1862 and was discharged 32 Ocgt 1862 becausse of these wounds.
