John CROUSE

He is buried in a family cemetery about 350 yards to the left of the highway going toward the Austin Community about one half mile from the church.  The cemetery is located on what is known to a few people as the old William Johnson farm.  William Johnson was a son in law of John and Nancy.


Capt. William Marion (Mason) NORMAN

Volunteered 4 May 1861 at Dobson in the first group to organize in Surry for the Civil War.  He helped R E Reeves with the company and was made first Sergeant that day.  Promoted to capt. when Reeves left for Field and staff.  Resigned  in Apr 1862.  In Aug 1862 he received a letter from Col. Mallet to return to duty.  He then joined 2nd Co. A wnd Rdg. NC and was a Lieutenant.  When Capt. Waugh was killed, he became Captain of the company.  Captured at Kelly's Ford, Va Nov 1863 and was sent to Johnson's Island Prison at Sandersky, OH.  He was released in Jun of 1865 and walked home.  It took three months.  Capt.  He wrote a book of his Civil War experience,( the best account seen in these parts) "A Portion of My Life
 He served as Co. surveryor, commissioner and justice of the peace on the Democratic side of the house.
