Volunteered (the first volunteer), 4 May 1861 at Dobson in the first group to organize in Surry for the Civil War. He entered as a sergeant and made second Lieutenant 9 Apr 1862. Served under Stonewall Jackson and A P Hill all along the line until captured, while out foraging, taken prisoner at Liberty Mills, VA around 22 Sep 1863, he was a POW at Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC and later at Johnson's Island, OH. His borther, William M., was also a prisoner there at the same time. Matt took the Oath of Allegiance and was released 12 Jun 1865. 2nd Lt. Co A 28 Reg NC
After the war, he taught school and was a much sought after speaker. He also served in the NC Legislature
He volunteered in 1863 at Petersburg, VA, to join his oldest brother Lacy's company. He was one of six in Co. B who were present with a gun in his hand at the surrender at Appomattox court House, VA, 9 Apr 1865. Pvt. Co B 2nd Battalion NC.
He served as justice of the peace under Cleveland until 1894.
