LOT MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Lela Campbell Chilton, 100, widow of Mr. Roscoe Lee
Chilton, of Simmons Road died Thursday morning, Jan. 17, 2002, at the
Northern Hospital of Surry County, Mount Airy.Mrs. Chilton was born in Surry County on Feb. 17, 1901, to the late William Stephen and Fannie Key Campbell.
Mrs. Chilton was a member of the Baptist church for 81 years. She was the oldest living member of Simmons Grove Baptist Church, where she was faithful in attending as long as her health permitted. The last four and one-half years she resided at Surry Community Nursing Center where she made many new friends. She was always an industrious homemaker. In later years she kept her hands busy with crocheting and made many treasured gifts for guests and family.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Margie and J.W. Denny of Pinnacle; four grandchildren, Dwight Denny and wife Jean of Jensen Beach, Fla., Linda Chilton Covington and husband Larry of Pilot Mountain, Jermayne Denny Cook of Huntersville and Garry Eldon Chilton Sr. of Pilot Mountain; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Chilton was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Roscoe Lee Chilton; a son and daughter-in-law, Eldon Lee and Lottie Tucker Chilton; a sister, Ida Campbell; two brothers, Lester Campbell and George Campbell; a stepsister, Sadie Peele Richardson; three half sisters, Jocie Hindsley, Oma Whitaker and Hazel Cook; and a half brother, Alton Campbell.Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at the Simmons Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Stewart Mauck and the Rev. Fred Chilton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Chilton is at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home and Chapel, Pilot Mountain, and will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at the funeral home.
