SMITH, Martha Jane:  1850 Census OHIO, Madison CO., Pleasant TWNSHP
(James Douglas)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Source:  Census Microfilm M432/706; 1850, OHIO
Date:    25 September 1850  Census page 223/224
(Records from SMITHS of Smithfield, Jefferson Co., VA by Jodie & Herb Depke
This is an attmept to identify Martha Jane SMIth, possible a daugther of John and Jane Smith (4).  Referring to Madison Co. OH Marriage book, "A" James Douglas Jr. to Martha Jane Smith 20 Feb 1845, this seems to be the confusing stituation with this family in teh 1850 Census for Madiosn CO., OH.  The only match in the 1860 Census is for a James Douglas, Pickaway Co., Darby Twp, pg. 59.  This census entry is for James Duglass, age 36 and Rebecca Duglas, age 30, which must be the same family as the first entry below.  Martha Jane (Smith) Duglass who married James Duglass, Jr. in 1845 might be a widow in the 1850 Census.

DWELLING  141:

DWELLING 144
----------------------------------------------------
Martha Jane DUGLASS age 20 (26) F    born OH
(This could be Martha Jane SMITH, daughter of John (4) and Jane Rees SMITH. Possibly a widow now.  Refer to Madison CO., OH marriage Book, and look at neighbors.  For the age, it is difficult to read, could be a 0 or a 6. Martha Jane SMITH would have been 26 at this time based upon a death record of Madison CO., OH, Deaths Volume 1, pg 56 for M. J. Douglas (sic) died Mt. Sterling, 15 Aug 1884 at age 59.

Death Record:  (Martha Jane SMITH) J. J. Douglas, Madison CO., OH
Record of Deaths 1867-1895 book 1, pg 56.
M. J. Duglas died 15 Aug 1884 at age 59.  At Mount Stirling. Was Housekeeper, died of consumption.
Mount Stirling is a town in the south east corner of Pleasant Township, Madison Co., OH.  Near the land of John and Jane Rees SMITH at the time of the 1850 census.

See 1860 Census for John SMITH IV for more of the ROBEY Children;, see 1850 census for Robert ROBEY s to his wife, Nancy SMITH.  Martha (?) Write is possibly another daughter of John SMITH m. first to a WRIGHT., notes by Jodi Depke and Herb Depke, SMITHS of SMITHFIELD, Jefferson Co., Virginia; More of the Story 1995.  Not sure also on age of Mary C. as 14 (19?) hard to read in records. Also 16 or 17 for Abram. And age for Jermand is a guess, also not positive as to sex or correct spelling of first name.

Rebecca U. Boone was born near Milton, Indiana.  Some years after her Father Driver Boone came to Spiceland and it was here she grew to girlhood and young womanhood.

Her mother died when she was about 12 years old if I remember correctly then he married Elizabeth Cooper Gause and she was a mother to Rebecca and the other children.  If I remember correctly Rebecca was married at about the age of nineteen to Henry B. Harvey of Lancaster Co., Penn.  to this she proved to be a true companion and help mate doing what she could to help make a living and to care for there family.  She was a woman that was kind and patient and to the five of there chidlren that grew to man and womanhood.  She ever taught them to trust in that Savior to whom she trusted and when she was so afflicted with spinal trouble and the doctors wanted her to give up trying to walk around she
would not promise them she would but when she spent a night in prayer for strength she told her husband to fix her bed as it has bin requested it should be.  It was got and fixed with a sod floor and a thin husk matris and she was helped on the bed and laid down and was not up for over four years, not a murmer to complaint escaped her lips.

She was patient and kind.  She got strength in this time so she could be up and walk and with a cane she would walk to her son Charleys a quarter of a mileor so.  But in January 1875 her last  illness came on such severe headache and at last her spirit going back to God who gave it thus a lving wife and a kind and loving mother left her loved ones in the care of her master.

Note: All spelling, puncuation and sentence structure is as it was in the
original manuscript.
