AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF WILLIAM EDWIN HIATT

“William Edwin Hiatt, son of Lorenzo Dow Hiatt, was bornin Barton Country near Jasper, MO  July  17, 1872.
“When  9 years of age he went to live eith the John C. Lazenby family near Carthage, Missouri.  While there I learned much about the Hiatt, and Lazenby families. From there he went  to Eureka Springs, Arkansas to live with his mothers parents Andrew C. and Nancy McNaught Pirtle. It was while living with them that he heard and learned much  about the Pirtle and McNaught  families. When 12 years  of age he went to Martinsville, Ohio, to live with his fathers parents, Clarkson and Jane Hollingsworth Hiatt. Others living  there at that time were his uncle Frnacis M. Hiatt.  His great uncle Abner Hollingsworth, and his great  grandmother “Grandma Hollingsworth;’ as every  one called her. ‘Grandma Holiingsworth’ was 92 years of age at that time, and quite active. Each Sunday morning she insisted on walking the one and one half miles to Martinsville to atend Quaker meeting. She told me that those walks brought back fond memories of her girlhood days. She would sing and pick wild flowers along the way. I well remember attending Quaker church with her in Martinsville. She would sit on the women’s side, and insisted that I sit on the mens side. There was no music, no preaching, just an hour of quiet and meditation.
“At the age of 16 years after being well taught and having learned much about the Quaker faith, and also having heard the history of the Hiatt and Hollingsworth families I returned to my  parents home, in Carthage, Jasper Co., Missouri, and finished my education in the public schools, a and later attended the Carthage Business College…
“…..After your Marriage, we resided in Carthage, Missouri until June 1914¸when we moved to Baxter Springs, Kansas, where we have continued to live, except for a period of time between November 1931 to June 1937 when we resided in and near Phoenix, Arizona.  The time  spent in Arizona was for the health of members of our family.  Our family has always been active in Church and Sunday school work.  I am still a church official and Sunday school teacher.  Was active in boy scout work, being scoutmaster for a number of years.

“While living in Carthage, Missouri, I was a shoe salesman, being part owner of a shoe store.  In Baxter Springs, Kansas, was sole owner of a large department store over a period of 18 years.  I am now part time employed as a shoe salesman in a department store.
“Served two terms as  alderman in Baxter Springs, Kansas,  Veteran of Spanish-American War. 1898.  Served as Lieutenant in Co., ‘A’, Second Missouri Volunteer Infantry, from April 27, 1898 to February 27, 1899.  Served in the armed forces of the State of Missouri from 1899 to 1915, as Lieutenant, Captain and also as Major.
“Served in the armed forces of the State of Kansas from 1916 to 1919 as Lieutenant, and also as Captain.  Was in the recruiting service  during the first World War 1914-1918.  Was attached as Captain in 17th U.S. Infantry in l911 during the Border trouble with Mexico. In l9l6 was assigned to Engineer Company as Captain during more border trouble with Mexico.  Was retired as Major after a total of twenty four years of military service. (R17).

In l950 William Edwin Hiatt sent in 38 pages of Hiatt data to be included in this volume, all of which has been entered under the appropriate headings except his first two pages, which are given below-editor.

“Genealogy of Our Branch of the Quaker Hiatts, as compiled and Recorded by Major William Edwin Hiatt, Baxter Springs, Kansas, June l5, l950. The Hiatt family are of English ancestry. Some fifty years ago my father Lorenzo Dow Hiatt contacted a Genealogist named Hoyt, who asserted that Hiatt, Hyatt, Hite, Hight, Haight, Royt, and a number of similar names, were all derived from one common spelling, originally English. “About this same time my Father met an old gentleman by the name of Orrin A. Hiatt from Guilford country, North Carolina, who had met and talked to two elderly men about the year 1850.  They were Quaker Hiatts, from Redstone, England. When I came to Baxter Springs, Kansas, some 36 years ago, I had as neighbors two extremely old men, who were born in England. One Mr. John Cook, the other Mr. Tom Farr. They each declared that ‘Hiatt’ was an old English name.

“About the year 1849 Benjamin Hiatt from Tennessee settled East of Baxter Springs, Kansas. He raised a large family. I have talked with several of his grandchildren and with some of his great grandchildren. They are Quakers, and claim to be of English descent.
“This record of the Hiatt family covers eight generations, and goes back to George Hiatt of Pennsylvania, who was the son of one of Three Hiatt brothers who emirated from England with William Penn in ll682. George Hiatt married Martha Wakefield, in Pennsylvia in the year l724. They had eleven children, etc. etc.” (R17).

"Genealogy of our branch of the Quaker Hiatts" was written by Major William Edwin Hiatt; he completed it on June 15, 1950.  There are a few minor errors in the article and they were faithfully reproduced.  No corrections were made except to place the children of Benjamin F.  Lazenby in chronological order and to correct the report of my death to that of my brother Gene.  Obvious typographical errors were corrected.  I do not know who has the original document.  MY mother gave me her copy in 1970.

My impression is that Major Hiatt was born with an insatiable desire to know the history of his family.  He lived with many branches of his family for extended periods of time during his youth.  Evidently he was always asking questions about the family history wherever he was.  He tended to keep good records of people's recollections (even when some of the older people unfortunately did not have a good memory).  However, with the advent of the release of much genealogical data, most of those minor errors should not be too big of a problem.

My only request to you as a reader of this article; is please do not place information from the article into your family records as the absolute truth.  Use it as a guide and: Verify, Verify, Verify.

Thanks to my wonderful wife Anna Belle Curl for helping to decipher an almost illegible copy of the original document.
Major if you are looking down on us now, Thank you for being so curious and especially for writing it down.

Hi David,

I wish I could tell you more about him, but that's what I need to learn.

He married a sister of one of my husband's ancestors.  Anyway, this is
what I have documented:

BOTTOMS Maud 1915.03.10 AR, Lawrence Co. HENNESSEE H.R. indicated in
Index Lawrence County Marriages  D 372

I do have some other Hennessee information but don't know jus how H.
Rhea Hennessee fits with it.

Could you please trace back your Hennessee ancestry so I can see whether
I have anything else that fits with it?

Please note my current e-mail address:  snow2@erols.com
