Martha, a daughter of Nathaniel and Clarissa Gaines, married Andrew Ramsay. One of their sons is Dr. David Marshall Ramsay of Greenville, South Carolina. He was born and reared near both the Fork Shoals and the Big Creek communities. He was graduated from the University of Virginia and from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. While he was still a young man, he became pastor of the First Baptist Church at Tuscaloosa, Alabama. After serving that church a few years, he became pastor of the largest Baptist church in South Carolina, the Citadel Square Baptist Church. He served as pastor of that congregation about seventeen years.
During all that period, he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Furman University. The Board operates Furman University and Greenville Woman's College, both of which are owned by the Baptist denomination. He resigned as pastor of the Citadel Square Baptist Church to accept the presidency of Greenville Woman's College; and he served as president of this college until his retirement a few years ago. He has attended almost every session of the Southern Baptist Convention for more than fifty years and has served on many of its important committees. His daughter, Mrs. Eudora Ramsay Richardson, lives in Virginia, and is the author of several books.Dr. David Ramsay was born just seventeen years after his great-grandfather, Hudson Berry, passed away. Hudson Berry had lived to hear the rumblings of the issues which led to the Civil War, and Dr. Ramsay was old enough to vividly remember its closing days and the reconstruction period which followed. He has lived to witness the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War 1, World War II, and the Korean War. His life span together with the life span of his great-grandfather, Hudson Berry-with only seventeen years intervening-covers a period of two hundred years of American history. He has continued the pioneering spirit of his grandfather Nathaniel Gaines and of his great-grandfather Hudson Berry.
