Was a constable in the Dobson district.....He volunteered at Dobson 4 May 1861 when he was 34...He entered service as a Corporal and made Third Lt. 9 Apr 1862 Co A 28th Reg, NC Troops. He resigned 15 Jun 1862 because he was over 35 and his family needed him. James left active service 20 Aug 1862. The Conscript Law was passed in Apr 1862 and it fell to the Home guard to see that conscriptees went into the military service. James became a Captain in the Surry Home Guard and served until the war was over. 3rd Lt. Co A 28 Reg NC
