Jacob Swisher, born 5 March 1784 in Pennsylvania as recorded in the U.S.Census of 1830 and later Huntington Township, Adams County, Ohio. This Jacob may be the son of Jacob who took the Oath of allegiance in Sussex County. On 13 June 1805 Jacob Swisher married Mary Jane Patterson in Adams County, Ohio, service performed by James Parker, as recorded in the Probate Court of Adams County. Jacob had settled in the vicinity of the Brushy Fork of Eagle Creek in Southern Ohio, then Adams County, but now the Eastern part of Brown County, just North of Hiett/Hiatt P.O. along Ohio route #763.
A history and genealogy of the Swisher
Origin of the name "Swisher".
It appears very likely that our ancestor came from Switzerland and/or Germany. The German language determination "er" means an "inhabitant or native of, or from", therefore Germans call persons from Switzerland "Switzer". The German name for Switzer is Schweitze; the "Z" in German as the sound of tz or ts. It would sound like Swiss-er, but might be written in many ways, that as SCHWEITZER, SWITZER, or SWISHER. Or, it is possible that our ancestors wish to "Americanize" the name from its German spelling. Some immigration officials and U.S. Census figures spelled names as he found them, so it is virtually impossible to trace them back origin of a particular line Swisher spelling, up to the time. Since there is no official language of Switzerland today, the large eastern part speaks German, like the country it forth on
HISTORY
It is probable, although not confirmed as of 1985, that our Swisher line descends from a John (Johannes) Schweitzer, whose three sons came to America, settling in Hardy and Hampshire counties, West Virginia. #Schweitzer (later Switzer) arrived from Rotterdam, Holland on 13 October, 1749; Johannes (John) Schweitzer arrived 17 September 1753; Nicolaus (Nicholas) Schweitzer arrived 21 October 1761. Records of Hampshire County, Virginia indicate Valentine, John and Nicholas, recorded as Switzer as well as Swisher at various times. The line of John Johannes) Schweitzer (Switzer or Swisher) after rival have not yet been located. However, the records Hampshire County list the will of John Swisher prorated 28 September 1846 which lists his 10 child as Jacob Swisher. Further research may indicate in this Jacob is our Switzer ancestor, which the U.S. Census 1850 list as living in Brown County, Ohio, being born in Pennsylvania, as his wife was. Census taker error, or that or the person supplying the data might account for the Pennsylvania. Further research needed. In the book " upper Mongolia Valley, West Virginia", butcher, pages 706 - 707 is stated that for Switzer (Schweiber) brothers came from Switzerland about 1750, John said near Winchester, Virginia and the other three went northward into Pennsylvania. It further states the name became Switzer or Swisher.
Mary Jane Patterson was born in Pennsylvania about 1794 and possibly the daughter of either Thomas or William Patterson who were recorded in the 1803 Enumeration list of Huntington Township of Adams County. Records that on 25 April 1817 James Taylor sold to Jacob Swisher of Adams County a tract of land containing 500 acre on Brushy Fork of Eagle Creek, a part of Isaac Hites Survey #1686. The Hickory Ridge Cemetery is located adjacent to this land, and Jacob Swisher who died 5 January 1854 is buried there. His wife's grave is unknown.
