According to family legend William M.? Guthrie killed a man by the name of Hagey, who was having an affair with Rebecca Barker Guthrie, and fled to Oklahoma. No other information was ever spoken of other than the fact that it happened in Bradyville, Iowa. No court record or newspaper record has been found in Page County, Iowa or Nodaway County, Missouri. The family has never known anything of this William.
In searching the Baldwin ancestors I located a Joe Loyd James Baldwin living in Bakersfield, California who was researching his Great-Grandfather William M. Baldwin. William M. Baldwin's family tradition states that he ran away from home at the age of 13 (Abt. 1853-54). Joe Baldwin's family believes that Baldwin is not the original family name and William M. Baldwin chose never to be listed on the Oklahoma Tax List or Census. Joe and I have made the following notes:
William M? Guthrie b. Abt. 1840 Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.
William M. Baldwin b. 18 October 1840 location unknown.William M? Guthrie moved when he was 13 with parents & siblings to Wayne County, Iowa 1853-54.
William M. Baldwinwould have been 13 years old 18 October 1853.William M? Guthrie ran away to Oklahoma.
William M. Baldwin ran away from Iowa at age 13.William M? Guthrie married Rebecca M. Barker, 29 August 1872 in Nodaway County, Missouri.
William M. & Sarah Collens Baldwin had their first child Lula Baldwin b. 8 April 1888 in Oklahoma.Did William M ?. Guthrie run away from the Guthrie Homestead in Nodaway County, Missouri (farm land borders Bradyville, Page County, Iowa and their post office would also have been Bradyville, Iowa). No county court or local newspaper record has been found concerning the killing in Page County, Iowa or Nodaway County, Missouri. The Clarinda, Page County, Iowa Court House records need yet to be checked. His father Michael Guthrie listed in his will of April 1884, William Guthrie as an heir/ William M. Baldwin had a child with Sarah Collens Baldwin in April 1888, so William M.? Guthrie must have departed for Oklahoma sometime in those four years.
Joe Baldwin has given us the following information:
1 March 1999 Email = William M. Baldwin ran away from home at the age of 13. My father told me that someone in Oklahoma said that they think he changed his name to Baldwin. I have a picture of his head stone at Sulphur Cemetery in Hartshorne, Oklahoma which shows that he was born October 18, 1840 and died December 26, 1909 and was the husband of Sarah Baldwin. I do not know what his middle name was. I could not find him listed on the census records of any year, which makes me think he did not want to be found. This would go along with what you say. I found his wife and my grandfather on the census after he died. It listed her husband as being born in Iowa. His wife Sarah C. Collens was born 15 February 1860 in Missouri. I hope this helps both of us. It sounds like the same person as you wrote me about. Please let me know what kind of trouble he was in and what was his real last name.
