Howard Merle Guthrie joined the Navy in about 1928. He was discharged from the Navy in 1932, remaining in Califormia where he married Lila March Hooser. He was in Clearwater, California in 1942. Clearwater was an unincorporated area near Bellflower, California.

Howard Lewis Guthrie tells us: The Hooser family entered Oklahoma via the land rush when the territory was opened. My maternal grandfather accompanied his father when they lined up on the Kansas border, his name was Lewis Edward Hooser, his father was George Hooser. They claimed some land with another family. Lewis married Olive Vernon Kelly in 1898. They eventually moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma where they owned and operated a Dry Goods Store, until they moved to California sometime between 1929 and 1933.
