Silas B. GUTHERY

HISTORY OF DAVIES COUNTY, MISSOURI BIOGRAPHICAL c. 1900

S. B. GUTHERY

Was born in Pike County, Ohio, October 27, 1817.  His grandfather was a colonel in the Revolutionary War, and in 1800 immigrated to the then far West - now the State of Ohio.  When our subject was a boy he was employed by William Parmer, of Bourbon County, Kentucky, in keeping, training and running fast horses.  In 1837 he turned his attention to farming and has followed that business ever since, together with handling stock, with the exception of a short time he was engaged in grading on the Portsmouth & Columbus turnpike in 1840, and conducted a tannery in Scioto county, Ohio, a few years.  In April, 1847, he settled upon the farm where he now lives.

Mr. Guthery was united in marriage November 21, 1840, to Miss Nancy L. March.  She was born January 24, 1822.  They had four children; Nancy - dead;  William B., born April 3, 1845;  James A. - dead;  and Sarah - dead,

William B. Guthery, son of S. B, Guthery, was born in Lucas county, Ohio, and lives on the old homestead, where his father settled in 1847.  He was educated at Smith's Mercantile College, of Portsmouth, Ohio, and was engaged from 1869 to 1873 in the mercantile business and in the handling and shipping of mules at Jameson.  Since that time he has been engaged in farming.

William B. Guthery was united in marriage, June 28, 1868, to Miss Eliza A. Brown, who was born in this county, August 20, 1852.  They have one child, James A., born June 29, 1869.

Nancy L. MARCH

Nancy L. March was from Scioto County, Ohio at the time of the marriage.

An interesting will which has been located in the archives of Daviess County, Missouri, has some similarities but does not match this family perfectly:
State of Missouri, County of Daviess...........February 16th 1874.....I Elizabeth M. Guthery of the County and State aforesaid, do hereby make my last will and testament.  It is my will that all of my real estate by divided between my four children, William A. Guthery, Mattie N. Guthery, Nancy M. Guthery and Charles P. Guthery.  I hereby bequeath unto my two sons William A. Guthery and Charles P. Guthery all of my real estate discribed as follows to wit: the East half of the South East quarter and the North East fractional quarter, East of Grand River of Section Twenty Seven and the South East quarter of the South West quarter of Section Twenty Six, all in township Sixty of Range Twenty Eight, to have and to hold the same provided that when Charles P. Guthery arrives at the age of twenty one years they Quit Claim Mattie N. and Nancy M. Guthery all claims they may have on the home place on which I reside at this time to wit: The East half of the North East quarter and the North East of the South East quarter; North of Grand River of Section Thirty One, and apart of the West part of the West half of the North West quarter, and part of the North West of the South West North of Grand River of Section thirty-two all of Township Sixty of Range twenty seven.  I also will and bequeath to my two daughters Mattie N. and Nancy M. Guthery my house place described above to be divided between them when Nancy M. Guthery arrives at the age of eighteen years:  I also bequeath to my three youngest children Mattie N. , Nancy M. and Charles P. Guthery one hundred dollars of my personal estate when they arrive at lawful age.  The above described real estate to be held and used for the benefit of my said children until by the terms of the said........... there can be a proper division of the same.  I hereby appoint John A. Brown, my executor to carry out the provisions........the fore going will and to settle up the estate of Mathew Nelson of which I am administrator.  I also will and bequeath to each one of my children one horse and one bed and bedding as now understood and claimed by them.  The balance of my personal property to be sold at public sale and applied to the payment of all just claims and expences and the residence to be equally divided between my children as they become of age.

We attest the above and foregoing will by subscribing our names hereto as witnesses in the presence of Elizabeth M. Guthery, the testratrix this 16th day of February A.D. 1874.

McDougal Judge of the Probate Court of Daviess County aforesaid do hereby certify that I have examined the annexed instrument of writing purporting to be the last will and testament of and signed by Elizabeth M. Guthery........................................................
Nancy L. March was from Scioto County, Ohio at the time of the marriage.
