SKETCH OF DURWARD BELMONT BROWN
“Durward Belmont Brown, son of Lloyd Wilson Brown and Mary Ellen (Cotrell). Brown, was born near Pruntytown, West Virginia, January 12, 1897. In 1904 the family moved to Grafton, W. Va., and in March of 1907 to Wheeling, W. Va. Durward attended Madison School, Clay School and Wheeling High School. He attended Allegheny College where he received A.B. and A.M. Degrees. He did his seminary work at Boston and received an S.T.B. Degree from Boston University School of Theology for work there and at Harvard. He has served the following charges: Alma, Supply in 1921; Corinth, 1924-27; Wheeling: Fulton-Gregg, 1927-31; Wesley Foundation at West Virginia University, 1931-33; Gassaway, 1933-36; Philippi, 1936-38; Grafton; St. Paul’s, 1938-42, Wheeling; Central, 1942-47; Shinnston: First, 1947-50; Morgantwon: Sabra, 1950__.
“He has been active in youth work in the conference, was conference statistician, and is listed in ‘Who’s Who in Methodism.’ One of his hobbies has been family history. He began in 1915 to compile all the information obtainable about his genealogy - especially that of the Gawthrop-Hiett Family.
“Mrs. Brown has had one article published in ‘Woman’s Home Missions Magazine.’” (Most of the data on the descendants of Elizabeth (Hiett). Gawthrop which appear in this volume have been furnished by Mr. Brown - editor.)
