The piece was sold by Alex Cooper Auctioneers, Inc in Townson, MD and was consigned to Cooper's by a direct descendent of the original owner. Previous to the MHS's purchase, no pieces by Chalmers were owned by a major MD museum. The cann is struck 4 times on the underside with Chalmers' mark, 'IC' and the initials "THW" which most likely refer to Thomas Howard Worthington. The side of the cann is engraved with the Worthington family coat of arms and motto, "We rise by the glory of our ancestors", in Greek. The survival of mid 18th century silver made in MD and pieces by James Chalmers Sr are extremely rare. Chalmers worked as a silversmith and tavern keeper in MD from Approximately 1749 until 1780. His siversmith shop ' AT the Sign of the Golden Ball" was located primaily in Annapolis. However, he also worked in Baltimore from 1766 until 1768. His 2 sons, John and James, were also Annapolis silversmiths. Chalmers issued what are generally considered to be the 1st silver coins minted in the US. Thomas Worthington 1691-1753, the son of John [we know as Capt John] and Sarah (Howard) Worthington, was born in Westminister Parish, Anne Arundel County. He married Elizabeth Ridgely in 1711 and together they had 10 childern. Thomas Worthington was elected to the Lower House of Delegates in 1725 and served for his district until his death in 1753. He also served in the St Anne's Parish Vestry and as churchwarden at St Anne's Parish." (SEE PHOTO)
